In the year 2022, gamers rejoice as Sword Art Online - a VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) like no other - debuts, allowing players to take full advantage of the ultimate in gaming technology: NerveGear, a system that allows users to completely immerse themselves in a wholly realistic gaming experience. But when the game goes live, the elation of the players quickly turns to horror as they discover that, for all its amazing features, SAO is missing one of the most basic functions of any MMORPG - a log-out button. Now trapped in the virtual world of Aincrad, their bodies held captive by NerveGear in the real world, users are issued a chilling ultimatum: conquer all one hundred floors of Aincrad to regain your freedom. But in the warped world of SAO, "game over" means certain death - both virtual and real...

As someone who has seen the anime, well before the book I didn't what to expect. I loved the concept of the story, but felt that the anime lacked, a lot of things. Almost instantly, I could start imaging the characters to life. The book was written in such a way, that it goes intro great depths, and really captivates it's reader. I felt that the light novel well exceeds the anime, in almost every single way. It made the characters seem alive, and made the world around them, become an image in our mind.

Love this book I like it more then the anime, you really get to know what Kirito is thinking by reading it rather then watching the anime. By the way the first 14 Episodes of the anime are based off 4 of the book not just two SAO vol.1, SAO vol.2, SAO vol,8 and SAO Progressive vol.1.

This light novel is highly recommended for all fans of the series. It primarily deals with Kirito and Asuna's relationship and their struggle to overcome the challenges of Sword Art Online together. It is very much focused on them and if you've seen the anime you will recognize the source material for several of the episodes. This is the first volume of the Aincrad arc. Volume 2 contains side stories and introduces Lisbeth, Silica and several other characters that Kirito and Asuna met during their time trapped in Aincrad.

This is the start to the Sword Art Online and after reading it its not hard to believe they created both a manga and anime from it. It is really well written/translated and draws you into the world and mind of the main character. I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

This is the first book in the light novel series "Sword Art Online". The anime is a combination of the first two books and this one focuses more on the second half of the anime. I liked it much more than the anime. Reading from Kirito's perspective made the world feel more alive and I was really able to imagine what life would be like in SAO. The writing is very well done and it made it easy to immerse myself in the story. I strongly recommend all fans of SAO read this novel. I also recommend this novel to gamers, both console and computer MMO players. Happy reading!

Sword Art Online Book Review I chose to read Sword Art Online Volume One written by Reki Kawahara as my first book project for humanities. The subject of this book is about a VRMMORPG ( Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) in the year 2022 called Sword Art Online, and it’s a game that many people are excited to play, but all players soon get stuck in the game. The type of book is a Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, but to explain it more simply it’s a futuristic video game that includes adventure, romance, and fantasy. The main character is a teenage boy named Kirito and he, along with many other players, buys the popular game SAO. All the players, 10,00 to be exact, logged into SAO right when it launched, but only soon after did the logout button disappear, making it so no player was able to get out. This game wasn’t just a computer, xbox, or any game like that where you just look at a screen, the players were actually inside the game, that is what a VRMMORPG is. The players are forced to beat each floor of the castle known as Aincrad, there are 100 floors total, and if you died in the game the nerve gear, a helmet like consoul the players use to play, will fry your brain causing you to die in the real world. During this journey Kirito meets many people along the way, but Kirito prefers to be a solo player and doesn’t make too many acquaintances. Kirito meets Asuna, who is a part of the strongest guild of the game, and he falls in love with her. Asuna also fell in love with Kirito, so both decided to stick together to beat the game. On floor 75, the hardest floor of the game so far, Kirito, Asuna, and many others are faced to a strong boss. The leader of Asuna’s guild, Heathcliff, is the maker of the game that was in hiding. He challenges Kirito to a duel, and if Kirito won Heathcliff would free everyone from the game. Kirito ends up beating Heathcliff and sets everyone free from the game and everyone wakes back up to where they were. When Kirito wakes up he is very, very weak because he, and everyone else who didn’t die, has been stuck in SAO for 2 years. Kirito realizes all that happened wasn’t a dream, so he sets out to try to find Asuna in the real world. Personally I absolutely loved this book! There were quite a few twists in this book which really were surprising. This book always had something happening and it kept me wanting to read more. I think others should read this book, especially if you love fantasy and adventure. This was honestly one of the best books I have ever read because the characters were original, and the author described them so wonderful. While I was reading I was able to envision everything so clearly. If I had to recommend a book to someone, this would definitely be one I would recommend.

My favorite. This light novel is perfect entry from watching anime to reading. Has some scattered and gorgeous artwork and reads quick so grab the next in series along with it. The drama pulls at those feels, the action is exciting and it can pull you into their world.

This book is so great! This is more of a novelization of the anime, Sword Art Online, but it goes deeper in the characters, their thoughts better than the anime did! 5 stars. If you have the money and are a hardcore SAO fan I recommend buying this book!

Surprised this was translated so well. Didn't find any blaring typos or lost in translation jokes. Also very happy they kept to the original Light Novel's style of Cover Art and periodic images throughout the story. It's definitely a great change of pace from traditional Fantasy novels that contain no pictures at all. I will definitely be picking up the rest of this series and looking into other Light Novels from this publisher.

A noticeable chunk feels missing from what the second volume is supposedly meant to fill in, but this is an otherwise magnificent novel. I feel that even critics of the anime will enjoy this wonderfully riveting and visceral experience. It's SAO as it was meant to be told.

If you liked the first half of the anime Sword Art Online then I think you'll definitely like this first novel. For me the book flowed much better than the episodes of the anime, letting everything make more sense and giving it greater flow. The love between Asuna and Kirito is so much more epic here in the novel. Certain side stories are not gone into as much detail as they were in the anime, so I expect they will appear in the release of the other novels. If your a big fan of the arc involving the doomed guild Kirito first joined you'll only find a two page mention in this book of what happened to them and the whole arc of Asuna and Kirito's "daughter" does not appear at all. Overall though I highly recommend this companion to anyone who enjoyed the anime or is interested in a sweet story of self discovery, heroism, and romance!
