Paper thin plot, stickmen characters, English as a second language dialogue.
After reading the authors' rave reviews/comments on the back cover of Sword of God, I thought, why not give this book a try.
It only took me several pages to begin to feel embarrassed for the author. I considered not finishing the book after about 50 pages although I have a long standing policy of giving any recommended book at least 100 pages with the hope of finding a redeeming attribute of plot, character, atmosphere, dialogue, something...before directing it to the circular file.
This reading experience brought a couple unpleasant implications to mind:
1) Very well known and successful novelists will say anything about another author's book if the endorsing authors get paid enough for the endorsement (after all, they are successful fiction writers) or they will say great things about a newer author's manuscript without having actually read it, and
2) Sometimes editors either do their editing while they're drunk or they don't do it at all because their best selling client-authors are too demanding of the editor's time.
If this was the author's first book, I could give it the benefit of the doubt and pat the author on the back for at least making the effort to get published. But alas, the author has a backlist. That is sad. An author should not be "cutting his teeth" on his thrid novel. It is common for a first book to fall flat on its face; it is unusal for a published third effort to be so sophomoric, so puerile.
Chris, if you bother to read these comments I hope you stick with the writing process. Eventually you may eventualoly earn the legitimate praise of other successful authors. I believe you have promise but you need to invest a substantial amount of time and effort in your craft before I'll buy another of your works. And hook up with an editor that cares about your efforts.
