The Sword of Shannara

Terry Brooks published his first novel, The Sword of Shannara, in 1977. It was a New York Times bestseller for more than five months. "I found my way to fantasy/adventure. When I got there, I knew I'd found a home," said Terence Dean Brooks, creator of the blockbuster, New York Times bestselling Shannara, Landover, and Word & Void series. Not only is Brooks at home in the highly competitive realm of fantasy literature, many would call him the genre’s modern-day patriarch – Tolkien’s successor. While that title is debatable, Brooks is, without a doubt, one of the world’s most prolific and successful authors of otherworld (and our world) fantasy. Few writers in any genre can boast a more entertaining collection of work – and a more ravenous and loyal fan base -- than can Terry Brooks.

The most rewarding aspect to writing for Brooks is “when someone who never read a book reads [one of mine] and says that the experience changed everything and got them reading.” Because of his very engaging, quick-flowing writing style, countless numbers of young people have been introduced to the wonderful world of reading through Brooks’s adventures. The miraculous thing, however, is that these same fans – whether they’re now 20, 30, or 40 years old – still devour each new release like a starving man would a steak dinner. Brooks began writing when he was just ten years old, but he did not discover fantasy until much later. As a high school student he jumped from writing science fiction to westerns to adventure to nonfiction, unable to settle on one form. That changed when, at the age of 21, Brooks was introduced to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien provided Brooks with a forum “that would allow him to release onto paper his own ideas about life, love, and the wonder that fills his world," according to his web site.

In 1977, after six trying years, Brooks published novel his first novel, The Sword of Shannara. And quickly it gave him – and his publisher (the newly created Ballantine imprint, Del Rey) – quite a thrill; the fantasy adventure featuring the young Halfling, Shea Ohmsford; the mysterious wizard Allanon; Flick, the trusty companion; and the demonic Warlock Lord, was not only well received -- it was a smash, spending over five months on The New York Times bestseller list. In 1982 Brooks released the follow-up, The Elfstones of Shannara (which Brooks says may be his favorite), to equal success. He closed out the initial trilogy in 1985 with The Wishsong of Shannara, and has since completed two more Shannara sets, The Heritage of Shannara books and the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara books.

As fans of Brooks know, the man doesn’t like to stay put. “I lived in Illinois for the first 42 years of my life, and I told myself when I left in 1986 that I would never live any one place again,” Brooks said. He now spends his time between his homes in Seattle and Hawaii; he and his wife also spend a great deal of time on the road each year connecting with the fans. These same nomadic tendencies are also apparent in his writing. Instead of staying comfortably within his proven, bestselling Shannara series, Terry frequently takes chances, steps outside, and tries something new. His marvelous Landover and Word & Void series are the results. While both are vastly different from Shannara, they are equally compelling. Word & Void – a contemporary, dark urban fantasy series set in a fantasy-touched Illinois – is quite possibly Brooks’s most acclaimed series. The Rocky Mountain News called the series’ first two books (Running with the Demon and The Knight of the Word “two of the finest science fiction/fantasy novels of the 20th century.”

When The Sword of Shannara hit The New York Times bestseller list, Brooks became the first modern fantasy author to achieve that pinnacle.

The Sword of Shannara was also the first work of fiction to ever hit The New York Times trade paperback bestseller list. Thanks to a faithful and growing fan base, the books continue to reach the list.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was not Terry's first novelization. He also novelized Steven Spielberg's 1991 movie, Hook.

Brooks’s The Phantom Menace novelization is also not his only connection to George Lucas. Both The Sword of Shannara and the original Star Wars novel, A New Hope, were edited by Judy Lynn del Rey and published in the same year (1977) to blockbuster success.

The Sword of Shannara was initially turned down by DAW Books. Instead, DAW sent Terry to Lester del Rey, who recognized Terry’s blockbuster potential and bought it. And the rest, they say, is history.

Brooks’s influences include: J.R.R. Tolkien, Alexander Dumas, James Fenimore Cooper, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Mallory's Morte d'Arthur.

    Great trip to a whole new world.

    This book series was a great trip into a world full of adventure. The parallel to the Lord of the Rings in the first book gives readers an insight to a world that is doomed if not for the courage of one small individual who will have to rise up and save mankind. The following stories of the family and their use of the magic that was passed down the generations will give readers new adventures to follow across an ever-changing land. This is a must read for all who truly enjoy epic fantasy. The series continues and once you start you will want to continue the stories of this incredible family with the entire Shannara series.

    You atleast have to try it!

    I read most of these books as a child and they never get old! Terry brooks does an amazing job of captivating the imagination. If you enjoy fantasy books at all you will love all of the Shannara series'. This is a must buy!

    General opinion

    I do not think that these books are ripped of from lord of the rings, plot, characters et cetera are different though both authers writing styles are similar. If you like the style of lord of the rings you should givr this a try, i liked it and i am domewhat critical of books. This was a good read and it will keep you occupied.

    TERRY BROOKS IS BEAST

    No author is as good as Terry Brooks. These books are amazing and you're INSANE if you say otherwise. My dad bought me the three books about two years ago. I haven't finished it all yet but I know the books are some of the best.

    Absolutely the Best

    I fell in love with the first three stories of Shannara, presented here in the Sword of Shannara Trilogy. Terry Brooks really takes you in the world of epic fantasy. The plot were amazing and the characters unforgettable. I have recommended this to everyone I know. A great read. It is filled with surprises and will keep you wanting more.

    Read the original printings when published

    When these were published, all three were in the large paperback form. I have sense read everything Terry has written over the next thirty five years in hardback copy. This purchase was to complete my collection in hardback. If you have not read these works, you are missing out on one of the finest authors of our time. Pick these up, and it's nice that all three are together, and you won't stop reading everything else.

    Good, but sometimes too much like LOTR

    I enjoyed the stories a lot, but sometimes I felt bogged down by too much information and sometimes it felt like I was not reading Terry Brooks but J.R.R. Tolkien. If you can forget about that there are complex believable characters and the plots can be exciting with spots that make you keep reading. Overall not my favorite book, but still a good read.

    Watered down Tolkien

    As a few have mentioned, the Sword of Shannara is a blatant Tolkien rip off. Don't mistake this for snobbery; it's not a terrible read. The characters are generic, the story is, plot point for plot point The Fellowship of the Ring, and the writing is not the best, but still it's perfectly readable and not at all a bad story.

    If you really like Tolkien (especially The Fellowship) and think you can avoid being upset by the similarities, by all means give it a read.

    A Great Fantasy Book

    People have said that The Sword of Shannara is somewhat like the Lord of the Rings. Well...only the first book is. There are three books in this huge book. The rest of the books are more original. You will love the great adventure of Wil Ohmsford as he protects the Elven girl in the Elfstones of Shannara. Buy the book, but know that you will love the other books in the Series. Be free to check The Heritage of Shannara and the Voyage of Shannara.     World of Shannara is a World of Its Own

    Hardcore Lord of the Ring snobs always depict Brooks' work as a 'rip off' of the Lord of the Rings -- I can never understand this, as after the first novel, the similarities are far and few. It's also amusing that few seem to realize that Tolkien's work is as original as those they call unoriginal -- they're a re-telling of ancient tales and histories with their own twists. There are only so many different tales with so many different variations in modern literature. Within these boundaries, Brooks creates the world of Shannara not only through this trilogy, but through the Word/Void Trilogy, the Heritage of Shannara series, the Jerle Shannara Trilogy, the High Druid Trilogy, and the brand new Genesis of Shannara series. He's created a world of his own, and if there were any similarities between his work and the work of Tolkien, they parted ways a long time ago. This series is worth reading because of the door it opens into the world of Shannara, one of the most comprehensive worlds since Tolkien's Middle Earth, and certainly easier and more fun to access.

    A fantasy must read

    The Wishsong of Shannara was the first fantasy book I ever read. 17 years later, and I am still reading them. When the new Shannara books came out in the 90's I felt pretty much the same way as when the new Star Wars movies were coming out. If you haven't read Brooks, make it your next purchase.

    Good fantasy read

    I recommend these books because they are straight-forward, entertaining and imaginative, although not original. Although the series has been compared to LOTR several times, it is not as well written nor as intricate as LOTR. It is, indeed, a good series, and it is easier to read than LOTR, which does not make it in any way better that LOTR, just shorter in size. Enjoy the Shannara stories for what they are: a fun, fast-paced, fantastical collection.

    MAGICAL!!!!!!!

    Better overall reading material than LOTR

    Thie series is written better than LOTR and the overall storyline is much easier to follow than LOTR. This series in my opinion is nothing at all like LOTR except some of the types of characters used.

    Sword of Shannara

    The Shannara series is only describable in one word: awesome. The story is remarkably fascinating as it unfolds in its own unique way. This is one series that defies a movie making of it, although that would be awesome.

    Better than LOTR

    Yes, the first book is very similar to the Lord of the Rings, a great trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, however, it is also better than it. And whoever said the Skull Bearers look like the Ringwraiths is way off, they are similar in theory but really very different. The Elfstones and the Wishsong are not like LOTR at all, and are very good. Probably the best fantasy series I've read this year, it is definately worth reading.

    Great Read

    I'm reading sword of shannara right now and its really awsome. So its a bit like LoTR, but who cares? its a great series. I recomend to all
