Children's Literature
Despite the deceptive title, only a few of the many chapters in this densely-illustrated introduction to ancient China and Japan are about warriors, although Japanese samurai and the famous terra cotta Chinese soldiers are not omitted. Spreads give an idea of many areas, such as art, religion, town life, farming, homes and gardens, writing, and inventions. The Chinese pages are illustrated mostly by photos of artifacts—a fierce bronze lion, a ceramic camel—and historic paintings, while the Japanese section often shows woodblock prints of daily life and some fascinating nineteenth-century photographs in which people are working in much older, traditional ways and dress. Each part (these were originally published as separate books) begins with an illustrated map and a timeline. Naturally, no area in this vast expanse of time can be covered in depth, but the lively text and the very well-chosen color illustrations should certainly catch the attention of any reader who picks it up. Especially if they come across, for example, a marvelous invention from China like the bronze jar seismoscope in which a ball would fall into a metal frog's mouth, detecting a tremor 310 miles away. An added feature is the set of thirty projects for kids to make, ranging from masks and armor to kites and food items; a glossary and an index are also provided. 2004, Southwater, Ages 10 up.
