Overview

This authoritative guide to JCL has sold over 200,000 copies. The fourth edition has been revised and updated to reflect the recent changes in the language and its emerging applications, including mission-critical coverage of the two most talked about topics in the field, Year 2000 retrofitting of legacy systems and secure e-commerce. Reformatted to match the profiles of today's programmers, this edition places new emphasis on providing guidance for programmers with a PC background. JCL features no longer supported by IBM have been gathered in one chapter on obsolete technology for use by those maintaining legacy systems. The book also features updates for the latest version of OS/390, including changes in architecture, hardware, devices, and terminology.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
New edition of a guidebook to the language that is necessary to run batch jobs on IBM large mainframe computers, updated to incorporate recent changes to JCL and the OS/390 features. Coverage includes statement formats and rules, direct-access storage devices, generation data groups, IBM utility programs, ISPF, TSO/E, and hierarchical file system files. The author also discusses obsolete JCL features so that readers can recognize them in old programs and know what to do with them. Features new sections on programming in multiplatform environments, new examples focusing on the concerns of PC programmers, and chapter-end exercises that can be run on a PC. This is the Bible for JCL

This has been and will always be the only book to use on JCL.

    Relatively good book....could do more

Possibly a find for modern shops and COBOL programmers, but I wished for the book that everyone TOLD me this would be. The modern edition cut out the section on system error messages, and made obsolete some features that my shop finds indispensable. For instance, the text recommends the IDCAMS utility to replace IEBGENER. This is neither recommended nor preferred by many seasoned programmers I conferred with. In fact, IDCAMS will create problems storing SAS datasets, whereas IEBGENER will not. Also the time honored use of the IEBFR14 (null) utility to refresh migrated datasets is hardly mentioned. I guess the book just has an older (COBOLian) feel to it. I think I would have also preferred some examples of JCL usage with related techniques and sage advice, such as making sure a dataset is deleted before allocating... and demonstrative examples. Otherwise, it seems like an encyclopedia of terms, and you should plan to spend alot of time browsing cover to cover to piece to together solutions to a given circumstance.
