All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
System of a Down's self-titled major-label debut finds the Los Angeles band consolidating its gothic alt-metal, sharpening its deadly riffs, strengthening its brutal rhythms, and adding muscle to its attack. The band differentiates itself from the legions of Southern Californian alt-metalheads by emphasizing its Armenian musical heritage, which gives the music an eerie, otherworldly quality. Part of the success of System of a Down lies with producer Rick Rubin, who helps give the band focus, but ultimately the record works because of the band itself, since they have contributed a set of strong songs that illustrates this is a band that relies on smarts as well ...

    A reviewer

SOAD's 1998 debut album. much to the belief of many website's, this is actually the SOAD(sorry, forgot his name!) drummer's best work. songs such as Know, Pluck, and Soil are the epitome of amazing and some of the best since Neil Peart and John Bonham. not to mention Serj Tankian's amazing vocal chords, Daron Malakian's trigger hand (for guitar) and Shavo Odadjian's deep bass sound, this is one great debut album for one of the best bands to form since 1995.

    Best One They've Done...

SOAD self-titled debut album is one of the best Metal/Alt. Metal albums I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. The lyrics here are fantastic. One problem with 'Mezmerize' was that, excluding B.Y.O.B. and Revenga, the lyrics were repetitive and didn't pack the politically charged, intelligent punch that I had expected from SOAD. Not true here. This album is totally frenzied, and it works perfectly. You'll be banging your head, and then a few seconds later you'll hear awesome melodic bits. My favorite tracks are Suite-Pee, Spiders, Sugar, and Peephole. Ah heck, all the tracks are awesome. This album just flat out rules. Go get it if you're in the mood for some truely unique metal.

Mezmerize is, as usual, an excellent album.

    The Future of Metal

I am a hardcore traditional metal fan purist. I like Maiden, Sabbath, Priet, old Metallica. But I still love SOAD. They are very creative and passionate in what they do. Unlike many new metal generic bands, they are original and interesting. Serj juxtaposes an aggressive growl with a incredible singing voice. Malakian has some of the best riffs and chops out there. Shavo and John, compliment them with a formidable rhythm section. My favorite songs are Sugar,Suggestions, and Mind. Long live SOAD!!!

A must have for any collection!!!

Whether you like punk-esque singing, heavy-metal death screams, or melodic singing, Serj, (accompanied by D. Malakian's crunch guitar riffs, Shavo's bone crushing pluck-style bass, and J. Dolmayan's adrenaline inducing speed drums,) can bring out the headbang brainkill in all of us. My only regret is that I didn't stumble on this band earlier on.

    best metal band

i heard about SYSTEM OF A DOWN when they did the hit single chop suey since then i have brought both albums and they are both brillant. if you like bands like slipknot or korn then this band is the greatest compared to them. The lead vocalist's voice (sorry forgot his name at the moment) is different and compare it to other singers voice's his is ace and is very good,if he screams it sounds good not rough or out of breath but good when he whispers he whispers so it is clear and you can hear it and when he does sing the songs like chop suey, sugar and suite-pee you will understand why this band is the greatest. No voice on earth can compare to his. His voice and the music it self will effect every sense that you have.

    Best album ever (almost)

Before I got into Aenima and Undertow by Tool, this incredible album was my favourite CD. System of a Down's incredible self-titled album is psychotic, hardcore, melodic, dark and politically angry yet intruiging. Serj is an amazing vocalist, from high pitched sqeaks to a rumbling guttural growl, he can do it all. Songs like Suite-Pee, Know, Soil, Darts, War, Mind, and Pluck are all hardcore psycho metal attacks, with chunky riffs, wicked drumming and Serj's crazed voice above it all. The band also display's its sense of humour in songs like DDevil, Sugar, Cubert and Peephole (a personal fav). With crazy lyrics and sometimes bouncy melodies, these songs are fantastic. The bands final aspect is its melodic side, with the songs Suggestions and Spiders. The former is close to being a humourous song, its also, in my opinion, the worst song on the album. Its so boring and I don't know why people like it. The radio-hit Spiders, on the other hand, has a great tune and singing so I like it. I've written too much so I'll stop, overall, my second favourite album ever (next to Aenima by Tool), picks you up when you feel down and rules to jump around too, puts limp bizkit into perspective.

if you like heavy metal, this is a must have

System of a down is a sick band. Serj's vioce is unmatched with his ability to sound quite odd at times; but having a great hardcore yell. guitar riffs also rule, making them one of the best metal bands around.
