Dream Theater is the greatest progressive rock band in the world, and this latest album is as good or better than anything they have done in the last 20 years of their incredible career. Because they have always refused to sell out and produce shorter, radio-friendly songs, they have been content to please themselves and their loyal fans with the longer, more complex compositions that have become traditional with British and American progressive rock bands like Yes, Rush, Genesis, and Gentle Giant. While David Bowie and Jethro Tull were more popular and wrote the shorter pop tunes, Dream Theater continued to produce the 12 minute songs that could never hope to get on commercial radio stations. People's attention spans, and the need for commercials meant that they would have to make it without MTV or 97 Rock. While many critics have said that their music is pretentious or even tedious, their fans consider them the premier musicians on the planet. When I compiled my list of the greatest 1,000 songs of the last 25 years in The Bachelors Bible, they were the only band to have 20 songs listed. If you like progressive rock music you will love every one of their albums, as well as the new DVD "Score" which I highly recommend.

Few bands in the history of rock have warranted the "either you love them or hate them" tag as much as Dream Theater, as fanatics consider them musical geniuses, while detractors sneer at their bombast.
