Table Style

Overview

A beautifully decorated table can be the making of a meal, whether it's a family supper or a dinner party. However, modern entertaining doesn't require you to polish the silver spoons, starch the napkins or roll out the red carpet. In Table Style, Liz Belton and Rebecca Tanqueray will inspire you to make the most of what you've got, combining chain-store staples and vintage finds with ingenious decorative flourishes to create a stylish, relaxed and welcoming table.

The first section, The Elements, looks at the components of a well-laid table — china, cutlery/flatware, napkins, flowers and candles — and explains how a collection of simple tableware plus a few well-chosen decorative elements can provide a basis for almost any event.

The second section, The Occasions, contains suggestions for a variety of different entertaining scenarios, ranging from a laid-back weekend brunch to a glamorous and sophisticated cocktail party. Each occasion offers fresh and appealing suggestions for china, glassware, linens, and flowers. And there are also a multitude of imaginative and easy-to-recreate finishing touches using everyday items such as candles, place cards, ribbons, kitchen utensils and seasonal decorations. Napkins are given a pretty twist when tied with vintage ribbon, for example, while hanging paper lanterns instantly conjures up a party atmosphere. To finish, the final section contains a useful visual dictionary of international place settings.

Whether it's a weekday supper with friends, a casual yet stylish barbecue or a classic celebratory dinner, Table Style is full of inspiring suggestions for gorgeous table settings that are perfect for the way we entertain now.
