Now that the dust has cleared from the Broadway disaster that was Taboo, it's time to reconsider the cast album. Taboo, featuring the original London cast (a Broadway cast album wasn't recorded), is packed with sparkling Boy George–composed songs that cover a gamut of styles, from vintage pop tunes circa the 1980s to contemporary theater songs.

Overview

Now that the dust has cleared from the Broadway disaster that was Taboo, it's time to reconsider the cast album. Taboo, featuring the original London cast (a Broadway cast album wasn't recorded), is packed with sparkling Boy George–composed songs that cover a gamut of styles, from vintage pop tunes circa the 1980s to contemporary theater songs. Although Boy George does get a featured number ("Everything Taboo"), the spotlight falls on the performer who portrays the pop icon, Euan Morton. Inimitable though Boy George may have been in his prime, Morton does a brilliant job of invoking him while bringing his own musical style and theatrical flair to the part. No, Taboo isn't the long-lost Culture Club album, but it is a striking display of Boy George's undiminished powers as a tunesmith and his potential as a force in musical theater.
