Overview

Over 125,000 Copies of the Previous Edition Sold

This longawaited and widely anticipated updated edition remains the definitive (and only international) reference to the most popular martial art form in the world.

A highly effective tool to help build and maintain skills, this volume is illustrated with photographic "walkthroughs" of every posture, and contains:
• A concise history of the art
• Warmup exercises
• Clear instructions for learning basic techniques
• Important tips and strategies for sparring
• Two glossaries: English to Korean and Korean to English
• More than 700 photographs throughout the text (25 new to this edition) that clearly illustrate each move.

Extensive and newly updated appendices include:
• Official rules of competition and classifications as an official sport at the 2000 Olympic games
• International organizations and competitions
• Weight and belt divisions
• A listing of international Tae Kwon Do associations.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This is another in a plethora of manuals claiming to be ``the ultimate'' guide to the practice of Tae Kwon Do. Most of the book deals with exercises and sparring techniques, while providing disappointingly short sections on the martial art's history and philosophy. Appendixes give additional information on the rules and regulations of Tae Kwan Do competition. The book's limitations recommend it only to public libraries desiring exhaustive martial arts collections. Otherwise, libraries would do well to rely on the more standard works, especially Duk Son's Korean Karate ( Prentice-Hall, 1968; Wehman, 1982. reprint) and Choi Hong Ki's Tae Kwan Do ( Wehman, 1980. o.p.).-- Ron Chepesiuk, Winthrop Coll. I use this book every day

I love studying tae kwon do, but only have time to go to class twice a week. In between I use this book to review my current and past forms. I don't think I would ever advance without this book.

    Good for beginners.

I picked this up after I started TKD. It is a very good reference for forms. It has helped with my studies at home. I would recommend this to anyone studying Tae Kwon do beginners to advanced.

    Great Book

This book is full of a lot of general information about Tae Kwon Do. It has a lot of pictures, and shows you how to do the forms(which you have to do to get to the next belt). It also shows you proper sparring and stretching techniques. Highly recommended for students of Tae Kwon Do. Not recommonded for someone with no martial arts or Tae Kwon Do knowledge.

    Great reference guide!

The pictures showing sparring & poomse are good, and there is a general history of taekwondo and general etiquette information. I like the fact that it is endorsed by the WTF. It is a good reference guide to use as you take classes and especially on your Poomse. I do like the book 'Modern Taekwondo' a bit better-- it has more detail in the poomse and a little more easier to understand, which helps when you are still in the learning process of the patterns or in need of review.

A good way to refrence an old poomse

It is a very good book for refrencing a poomse that you are learning or have forgotten. It shows pictures of each movement and also has a description of the each movement in a step by step guide. It also has rules for sparring, a bit of self-defense, and basic kicking. It is best for a student who already knows the forms and is going back to relearn them for a test or for teaching.
