Er hatte es sich zum Ziel gemacht, die Leute, die er bewunderte, kennen zu lernen. Er erlangte eine Art persönlichen Ruhm durch diese Bekanntschaften, wie er selbst in seinem Tagebuch einmal schreibt. Er wollte dadurch bedeutender werden.
Bemerkenswert sind der Eifer und Elan, mit denen er im Allgemeinen sein Ziel umzusetzen wusste. Boswell zählte zu seinen Bekanntschaften Namen wie Rousseau und Voltaire und hatte eine enge Beziehung zu Samuel Johnson, dem wohl größten englischen Schriftsteller der zweiten Hälfe des 18. Jahrhunderts. Diese Freundschaft verschaffte Boswell letztlich eine eigene Berühmtheit: zunächst durch die Veröffentlichung der Berichte über seine Reise mit Johnson und schließlich die Biographie Samuel Johnsons, durch die Boswell über sein Leben hinaus berühmt wurde.
Eine der für Boswell wichtigsten Bekanntschaften machte er jedoch nie: Friedrich II. von Preußen, der Große. Dieser hatte alles, was ihn als Persönlichkeit in Boswells Augen begehrenswert machte. Erstens war er adelig, von höchstem Rang und Status. Weiter war Friedrich II. ein bedeutender Herrscher und Kriegsführer, der sich schon früh einen Namen gemacht hatte. Und schließlich hatte er eine Eigenschaft, die für Boswell unwiderstehlich war: Friedrich der Große war der Philosoph von Sanssouci, von Kunst begeistert und an Wissenschaft interessiert. Boswell litt sehr an der Niederlage, diesen bedeutenden Mann nie gesprochen zu haben.
