Overview

According to Master Liao, the great power of T'ai Chi cannot be realized without knowing its inner meaning. T'ai Chi Classics presents the inner meaning and techniques of T'ai Chi movements through translations of three core classics of T'ai Chi, often considered the "T'ai Chi Bible." The texts are introduced by three chapters explaining how to increase inner energy (ch'i), transform it into inner power (jing), and project this inner power outward to repel an opponent without physical contact. Master Liao also provides a description of the entire sequence of T'ai Chi movements, illustrated by his own line drawings.

Master Waysun Liao (trained in Taiwan, he has taught in the US for 30 years) offers not only a translation of the T'ai Chi Classics I, II, and III (commonly known as the T'ai Chi Bible) but provides explanations of them, with frequent line drawings to demonstrate the basic principles described. In addition to the Classics, the text contains four short works from collections by unknown masters and a chapter on the T'ai Chi meditative movement. The work is intended as an introductory text rather than a complete training manual, The 1977 printing was produced by Del Mar. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Great book for beginners as well as more experienced practicioners. Waysun Liao emphasises the importance of practicing athentic Tai Chi, which is grounded in meditation and the cultivation of Chi. Unlike other books, this book gives clear directions on how to cultivate your internal energy(Chi)and internal power(Jing).

Two features make this a must-have for any Taichi practitioner's library: Liao's translation of the "Tai Chi Classics" and his commentary that explains how to apply each quote to your practice, and the line drawing of the long-form at the end of the book. There is also a good history of Taichi. The section on Jing is a little advanced... would be good to read his first book on Chi prior to this.

This book is packed with history, wisdom and technique pertaining to Tai Chi. It is a combination of three text on the subject. At first glance, there seems to be a disorganization in the manual if you tend to page hop through it as I tend to do with a new book. That said, the author makes a good attempt at translating the text into a more understandable form for clarity. Due to the subject matter, a first read coupled with effort to practice the instructions makes a second read a much more understandable. It is a case where application lends context which helps to foster understanding. A definite must for anybody with a serious interest in Tai Chi or who is looking for a better understanding of the human energy system and a practical means to develop it. Sure to be one of the best references to return to on a regular basis as you grow and develop in training and understanding of the principles presented. HIGHLY recommended!
