Overview

The T'ai-Shang Kan-Ying P'ien is a classic work of Taoist ethics and morality. The text of this edition was translated and published in 1906 by Paul Carus and Daisetsu Teitaro Suzuki. It was the first translation of the T'ai-Shang Kan-Ying P'ien into English directly from the Chinese. The 1906 edition contained the Chinese text, the English translation, and ample notes and references to assist in interpretation of the text. Bound with the T'ai-Shang Kan-Ying P'ien is a collection of morality tales that illustrate its principles.
This 2011 Alcuin Classics digital edition contains the English text of the T'ai-Shang Kan-Ying P'ien and the morality tales, facsimiles of the Chinese text and the word-by-word English gloss of that text, facsimiles of the original 16 plates, and a front piece bearing a likeness of Lao Tze. Everything has been digitized and optimized for an e-reader screen. Because the notes are such a crucial part of the 1906 edition, this e-book not only preserves them but fully digitizes them as hyperlinks. This particular edition of the T'ai-Shang Kan-Ying P'ien is frequently referenced by other books. For that reason, and to keep the usability of the index, this edition notes the original page numbers in the right margin in curly brackets.
