Takako Nishizaki was the very first graduate of the Suzuki course. She was helped along, in large part, by her father, Shinji, and was 9 years when she received her teacher's diploma. Shinji Nishizaki worked closely with Shinichi Suzuki, founder of the Suzuki method. By the age of 10, Takako Nishizaki had performed with the likes of Isaac Stern, and Sir Malcolm Sargent. So, I think it's safe to say that Takako Nishizaki is an excellent choice to record this series of exercises and popular classical works which are very familiar to students of string instruments. Volume 1 begins with rudimentary pieces designed to help students understand changes in rhythm, develop proper bowing technique, and become familiar with finger placement. Standards such as Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, Lightly Row, and May Song are performed as beginning works, and are given straightforward performances. From there, Nishizaki plays classical works with familiar melodies. Minuets by Bach, Beethoven, and Boccherini bookend works by many other famous composers. The first disc in the series feature pieces for violin and piano only, and accompaniment is expertly played by Terence Dennis, and Sarah Watkins. The booklet contains intelligent liner notes, and many black and white pictures of the Nishizakis, and Suzuki himself. This series would be a great choice for any student, current or former, of violin, viola, cello, etc. Volume 1 is the logical choice for beginning students.
