Overview

Just short of a decade into their incredibly successful and influential career, Korn went into Take a Look in the Mirror publicly stating their hopes to record a fresh-sounding album, a seemingly simple task that they somewhat ended up accomplishing. They needed a fresh album -- one that differed from their past couple, the similar-sounding Issues (1999) and Untouchables (2001), yet at the same time wouldn't alienate their notoriously fickle nu-metal fan base. Issues and Untouchables had been fine albums, but Korn definitely needed a change -- if they wanted to remain relevant, that is. There's a lot of turnover in the metal world because there's always the next big thing (whether it's thrash, grindcore, alt-metal, rap-metal, or whatever), and the rare bands that do last (like, say, Tool) do so because they keep changing and therefore retain the curiousity of their perpetually aging (and thus perpetually dwindling) fan base while at the same time drawing in new generations of listeners. It's a tricky business, really -- you need to keep changing yet still maintain your essence. And Korn does that very well on Take a Look in the Mirror, where they deftly consolidate their past strengths and self-produce a succinct album that sounds like trademark Korn -- yet purposefully doesn't sound like any Korn album to date. It's a little paradoxical, but that's precisely what makes Take a Look in the Mirror so interesting, especially for longtime fans. Particular songs draw from past Korn albums -- whether it's the ultramelodic Issues/Untouchables style of "Alive," the overt rap-metal Follow the Leader style of "Play Me," the covert rap-metal Life Is Peachy style of "Y'all Want a Single," or the seeing-red berserk Korn style of "Break Some Off" -- while a few highlights ("Right Now," "Counting on Me," "Did My Time") break into exciting new territory. And perhaps most importantly, Korn keeps Take a Look in the Mirror brief: a baker's dozen in 45 minutes if you don't count the hidden bonus track (their ADD-paced live version of "One" from MTV's Metallica comeback special). Because of the emphasis on brevity and variety (and especially quality), the album's over before you know it and you're left feeling hungry for more Korn.

1/2 Davis hasn't traded self-pity for self-reflection, but he is screaming "f**k you" with greater precision.

only downfall to this cd was track 8, the intro and beat and music all together makes the song sound quite impresseive and catches my interest, but then rap, it honestly reminds of the ice cube and korn track from previous album (follow the leader), job well done no wonder its such a hot download, i mean buy

Just one thing to say about this album... Awesome. Jon Davis screams his lungs off on this album. It is the coolest thing. It reminds me of the good old days when I first bought Korn's self titled album. "Take a Look in the Mirror" is such a great album, there is not much more to say about it. Get the album and see what I mean. Metal fans, if you have fallen astray from past Korn albums, this album will lore you back. It is great. I can't wait to hear the songs in concert. Now if you will excuse me... I gotta listen to the album again. KORN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This album has made a true Korn fan out of me. It is so killer. It's loud, it's hard, it's just awesome. This is the best of Korn's albums. I love the guitar licks. My favorites are Right Now, Play Me, and...oh yeah....all the other songs. This whole album kicks major a$$! If you're into hard rock and metal, you absolutely have to buy this album. This is one of the best albums of all time, no joke.

I picked up the Korn cod Saturday, I have yet to put it down. From a musical stand point I believe that TALITM has defiantly shown as long as Korn has been around there is defiantly room to move on to adapt. I believe that Korn has done an amazing job on this album. Lets talk about Fieldy, after listening to the cd I have noticed that his bass has to be tones so low and loose for that string to hit the fret and make that noise. Which is awesome, not only for the sound he gets from it, but Korn can pull that off with ease. Now lets talk about Jonathan Davis, he has shown massive improvement. He goes from high pitches to his usual semi-screaming to hard barking like its nothing. His addition of screaming shows that Jonathan Davis has more up his sleeve than he let us all know. Another aspect that I liked was the NAS song. Not for the fact that its rap, but for the fact that I think it shown Korn is ok with diversity in music. I think this might help the feud between rap and rock just a little bit. As for the sound of CD, the sound was a little darker than I have seen Korn like to use. I as well believe that the direction that they are moving, for example the song Everything I’ve Known, is showing a little more technical side of Korn is coming out. More triplets are being used and placement of riffs along with the drum riffs and singing are placed masterfully. Overall I believe that if you are a Korn fan and you liked Untouchables than you are going to like this. The switch from Issues to Untouchables was a little drastic, but this CD ties it all in. Very good CD.

Quite possibly KORNS best CD to date. DARK, AGGRESSIVE, deep, thought provoking, absolutely haunting! This CD is angry and demented and an absolute pleasure to listen to. If this is what self-producing a CD turnes out like, i suggest they continue along this path! BUY THE CD! You wont be able to turn it off. Five stars and two thumbs up!

This is the best Metal/Rock CD of 2003. If you like Slipknot, Adema, or Staind, you'll absolutely love this album. After hearing this album, you'll be running to your local CD store to buy Korn's other 5 CDs.

KoRn's newest and greatest CD, if you wanted older KoRn come time for Untouchables to release, you were meant to listen to this album. Old heavy riffs with new modern bass and sexy style drumming from David, and Davis's vocals propelling the songs to their destiny, this CD OWNS major. Take it from a KoRn KAMPER (visit www.korn.com, the official KoRn website) that this CD is tha shiat you have been waiting for!

Just when I thought Korn couldn't get any better... actually, that's a lie. I've never thought that. Anyway, this new album combines elements from all their other albums, resulting in this incredible new record. I haven't stopped listening to it. I bought it two weeks ago.

Great album. The korn I love is back again. Although they have changed over the years, they've brought back some their old signature styles (bagpipes, hip hop elements, and wailing, groaning vocals by Jonathan Davis. There are no words that can possibly explain the feeling I get when I listen to their record. You'll just have to get it yourself. The Limited Edition is worth it, by the way, the liner notes and the SKRAPBOOK is beautiful; filled with photos from back in the day. Few bands have been able to stay in the industry over the years, but korn has been keeping on along with their massive army of fans. Bottom line: go get it. now. its loud, heavy, emotional, melodic (at times), and definitely worth a listen. It's everything you'd expect from korn and more.

When I received this album on its release date, I was estatic. After listening to it for an entire week straight, I can honestly say it is KoRn's best work yet. It combines the raw heaviness of thier first few albums, with the melodic beauty of their last few albums. Combine this with something new, and its a fresh cd thats addicting to even the heaviest metalhead. KoRn is back with a vengence, and the World better be ready.

This is, to put it politely, Korn's weakest album. There are only three worthy songs (Right Now, Did My Time, and Y'all Want a Single) out of the fourteen on this album. All three can be found on "Greatest Hits: Vol 1" so buy that instead.

Just when I thought it was impossible for Korn to top themselves, they did it yet again and in a big way. This CD is nothing short of perfection! It is a master piece that you wont be able to remove from your CD player. There is not one song that I skip through, they are all equally but in there own way kick a$$!

The new KoRn cd is the best cd they have made yet. I think if you are going to get 1 cd this year KoRn's new cd "take a look in the mirror" is the 1 you should buy.

KoRn's 6th studio album 'Take A Look In The Mirror' came out with a BanG!! Since their Debut album KoRn has been "growing" over the years, Progressing with each album! But this album Is 'Heavy' like the first but at the same time they tie in "perfect" melodic stuff like the last couple of records!SO BUY THIS ALBUM!!! And if you do buy it you should get the one that comes with the DVD, It KoRn, Beeing, um...KoRn!!!

Take A Look In The Mirror... absolutley rocks! I recommend it to anyone who loves KoRn, or appreciates great metal. They combine their older aggression and loud antics with their sound today, and it sounds perfect! And don't forget about the Bonus DVD and the Hidden track at the very end of the CD....
