Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Jimmy Draper
Anyone who remembers all those ill-titled albums by the Smashing Pumpkins knows that releases with such high falutin' titles as Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday usually beg to be dismissed as little more than the pretentious, self-indulgent bursts of egocentric musicians. It's a great surprise, then, that Creeper Lagoon's second long-player bucks expectations and actually makes good on the indie rock promise of the band's full-length debut, 1998's overhyped albeit underwhelming I Become Small and Go. And although this release doesn't change the formula of the band's past, the songs here are catchier, smarter, better. Opening with the guitar-driven anthems ...

And although this release doesn't change the formula of the band's past, the songs here are catchier, smarter, better. Opening with the guitar-driven anthems "Chance of a Lifetime" and "Wrecking Ball," the album immediately sounds so emotionally and sonically overwhelming that it actually lives up to the enormity of the title. It's the more subdued tracks like "Under the Tracks" and "Keep From Moving," however, that prove the band is more than typical rock radio fare. So if you can overlook the absurd title, Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday is nothing less than perfect Creeper territory.

    Worth a listen...

A good comparison for ''Take Back The Universe...'' would be to compare Creeper Lagoon's sound to Jimmy Eat World. They fall under the category of lesser-known, emo-alternative rock which, in my opinion, outshines if not out-sells the more mainstream sound. Creeper echos much of what is appealing about popular radio music, while maintaining a unique style of their own that doesn't fail to surprise and stimulate the imagination. It's worth a listen for those who have discriminating taste in what they buy.

    Well done...

I just boaught the greatest cd I've heard this year. I have been a fan of Creeper Lagoon for a couple of years but I was worried when they signed a deal with Dreamworks Records. I thought the cd was gonna sound too slick and overproduced. Quite the contrary. This offering has all the elements of what made Creeper Lagoon such a terrific indie band, and yet they have managed to step up a notch and put forth an expansive sound to compete with all the horrible stuff that's on the radio right now. Well done guys!!!

    You will not be disappointed...

I have to say that Creeper Lagoon's new CD is better than I expected. It's not the typical poppy formulaic sound that you hear in everything else these days. I definitely recommend this one for those music lovers who seek out more original and interesting new music. I was not disappointed.

    It's worth the green...

If you are fat on cash but short on ideas of what to do with it, may I suggest some new tunes. To be more specific, the new ''Creeper Lagoon'' cd. It's called ''Take Back The Universe And Give Me Yesterday'' and it's one of those albums that does not disappoint, unlike most albums these days. The cool thing about these guys is they're not afraid to experiment and head down the less traveled musical roads. Most bands these days stick with a formula and right now the formula SUCKS!!! Make sure to check out track 11. It's called ''Lovers Leap'' and harkens back to Bowies hay-day. Good stuff to say the least. Anyway, it's worth the green. You can find it in the Rock section, under ''C''... for COOL!!! (or Creeper Lagoon.)

    A Must - Listen...

I've been following Creeper Lagoon's music and this CD is certainly a departure from their last CD. It takes several twists and turns stylistically, ranging in flavor from the radio-friendly alternative pop sensibility of Oasis with ''Wrecking Ball'' to more unique, other-worldly stylings of David Bowie with track 11. Definitely a must-listen for music lovers who have become weary of the cookie-cutter pop formula.
