Overview

The success rate in commercial weight-loss programs is a dismal 5 to 10 percent - while sensible, self-empowerment systems appear to work better over time. Devised by a physician who followed it himself with excellent, long-lasting results, this rational and effective weight-loss program emphasizes personal design and control through low-fat diet, exercise, and life-style changes. There's no need for starvation regimens, special foods, group sessions, or ...

Overview

The success rate in commercial weight-loss programs is a dismal 5 to 10 percent - while sensible, self-empowerment systems appear to work better over time. That's the thinking behind Take Control of Your Weight. Devised by a physician who followed it himself with excellent, long-lasting results, this rational and effective weight-loss program emphasizes personal design and control through low-fat diet, exercise, and life-style changes. There's no need for starvation regimens, special foods, group sessions, or exhausting workouts. Dr. Steven Jonas first explains the metabolic reasons why gimmick diets not only fail but actually contribute to overweight, then suggests strategies for making a guilt-free, realistic self-assessment; finding which of four major pathways led to your overweight; selecting the correct pathway down to weight loss; and achieving your own goal setting and motivation. Only then does he help you to begin, gradually, an eating and exercise plan geared to your personal needs. Those who are overweight are encouraged to make the right choices and stick with them during the inevitable detours and delays as they're learning about healthy shopping and cooking, which are the basis for healthy eating. Easy to follow and supportive throughout, this book doesn't ask you to believe in miracles - just in yourself.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Working with with the editors of Consumer Reports Books, Jonas, professor of preventitive medicine at SUNY-Stonybrook and author of The I Don't Eat But I Can't Lose Weight-Loss Program ( LJ 6/15/89), has put together an exceptional weight-loss guidebook. Outlining a ``Pathway Up'' (how and why one gains weight) and a ``Pathway Down'' (how and why one can lose weight), he encourages dieters to adapt his lifestyle guidelines, which are based on solid, universally accepted nutrition and exercise programs, to their own personal goals. Jonas offers tips for healthy eating, shopping, and cooking, but he does not includes recipes. Charts for exercise plans feature information on various sports and exercise equipment. With an excellent section of suggested readings and general references, this very detailed guide is strongly recommended for consumer health collections.-- Loraine F. Sweetland, Rebok Memorial Lib., Silver Spring, Md.
Booknews
Dr. Jonas (a public health physician) does not promise fast and easy solutions; in fact, he recommends that people take their time developing new habits and describes his own slow metamorphosis. He writes informatively and without hype about diet, exercise, and why. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
Karen Graves
Triathlete and physician Jonas has devised a weight-control program that he presents here under the auspices of "Consumer Reports". Based on solid science as well as personal experience, the program has five injunctive steps: take control of your life and body, respond only to internal motivation, set reasonable goals, explore your limits, and make changes gradually. Jonas kicks off his presentation by discussing metabolism and motivation, then moves to his diet and exercise proposals. Part of the package is advice on healthy shopping and cooking and on sports techniques and equipment, while appendixes treat the risks of obesity and benefits of weight loss, the psychosocial factors of being overweight, the benefits of racing, and setting up a pace-walking club. Jonas' sensible program will appeal strongly to those who've tried fad diets and failed but who still want to lose weight.
