Overview

Jenny and Joanna love their imaginative and exciting grandmother. It's hard to guess what Grandma is going to do next. But this time, when the old lady arrives to take them to an outing, Jenny and Joanna are really puzzled. Their parents protest. It's a school day! What could be more important than school? But Grandma won't take no for an answer. And with the promise, "Just this once," she whisks them off to Yankee Stadium for an unforgettable afternoon at the ballgame.

Set to the lyrics of the seventh-inning-stretch baseball anthem, Take Me Out to the Ballgame is an exuberant romp. Preschoolers and early readers will sing along as they share in the excitement of banners, hot dogs, a roaring crowd, rooting for the home team - all part of the glory that is baseball. A perfect book for beginner readers, boisterous singers, and all future fans of America's favourite sport.

". . . a whimsical story about the adventures of two young girls who love to play baseball. . . The illustrations themselves tell a story and help the reader feel as if he or she were part of the game itself."

Daily Press

Publishers Weekly
The title and characters may be the same, but Take Me Out to the Ball Game by Maryann Kovalski is a brand-new version of her story first published in 1992. Grandma insists that Jenny and Joanna come on a surprise trip-even though it's a school day-"just this once." Delighted when they arrive at Yankee Stadium, the girls break out into the title song. The illustrations exuberantly convey the joy of root-root-rooting for the home team. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
What could be more fun than an outing with Grandma especially on a school day? To find out, join Joanna and Jenna as they set off, after getting permission from their parents and the principal, on a journey to a special destination. Grandma does a good job of keeping the destination to herself as they dine on breakfast and ride the subway. It is only after they see the Yankee Stadium sign that the secret of seeing a ballgame is revealed. Before they even get off the subway, Grandma breaks into a rendition of "Take Me out to the Ballgame." It's not long before everyone is boisterously belting out the tune that carries the reader to the end of the book. The illustrations that follow are perfectly matched to the actions of the girls and Grandma as they watch the game. The soft colored illustrations also spell out the energy and exhilaration of all the spectators, with special emphasis on the girls and Grandma. Kovalski draws readers into the story through the use of her excellent facial expressions. Note that all pictures have several repetitions of circular shapes from faces, caps, open mouths, to spectacles. Whether by accident, or intention, this is extremely effective. A copy of the song appears at the back of the book so all who want to can sing it every time they read the book. 2004, Fitzhenry &Whiteside, Ages 3 to 8.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-Kovalski's book celebrates the excitement of attending a baseball game. What begins as the story of a grandmother who asks permission to take her two granddaughters on a trip that is "more important than school" continues as an eventfully illustrated version of the familiar song. Kovalski's watercolor illustrations project the vivacious personality of grandma and the joy of the experience beautifully. The words and music are included at the end of the story. This title is sure to be a hit with baseball fans young and old.-Kelley Rae Unger, Peabody Institute, MA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
