Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
"All boys are dumb," Lucy emphatically tells the reader more than once. We may rightly wonder how a preteen with such "wisdom" will succeed when she is chosen by a committee of school faculty to be the advice columnist for the school newspaper. The committee likes her response to a sample question more than the completely self-absorbed and unethical response provided by her sole competitor for the job—even though it seems unlikely that a multi-grade school such as this offers only two applicants for such a gig, both from the same class. In between worrying about when her menstrual cycle will begin and tolerating scheduled bonding events with various members of her blended-family quartet, Lucy responds to peer concerns about the upcoming Sadie Hawkins dance and stews about the difficulty of girls inviting boys to the dance. Some elements of the story are especially unrealistic, as when appearance-obsessive Lucy approaches her long-time crush Blair with zit cream all over her face, or when she stacks mini-pads on top of maxi-pads to deal with the impending menstrual flood she anticipates. Her repeated insistence that menstrual onset occurs in conjunction with stress begs for intervention; it is strange that her older stepsister or mother has not set her straight on this point. It will be a shame if readers accept Lucy's assertions about this as truth. Unfortunately, the book seems a tired retread of themes—menstruation, prayer, blended families, friendship, preteen dating—better handled by other young adult works. Perhaps the book's failings would have been redeemed if Lucy had realized that asking someone out is difficult for girls and boys alike; a subplot in which her mother and stepfather struggle with planning their anniversary celebration certainly provides ample opportunity for this. Still, fans of Yours Truly, Lucy B. Parker will probably welcome this addition to the series.
