Overview

Despite the fact that no porn stars grace the cover of Take Off Your Pants & Jacket, don't think for a minute that Blink 182 have abandoned writing about sex, toilet humor, and the kinds of awkward social moments familiar to every teenager. With plenty of pop-punk hooks and choppy guitar riffs in their arsenal, Mark, Tom, and Travis pick up where they left off on Enema of the State, opening with the generational diatribe "Anthem Part II." From here this goofy trio taps into the ups and downs of adolescent angst, including the pain of unrequited infatuation ("Story of a Lonely Boy"), divorce ("Stay Together for the Kids"), and the feeling of being an outsider amid high school's vicious social tribes ("Give Me One Good Reason"). Blink's knack for delivering four-on-the-floor tempos and catchy sing-along choruses keeps things from getting too weighty, and the band's flip attitude makes for plenty of funny moments, from a 40-second, punk-fueled flip-off of an ex-girlfriend ("Happy Holidays, You Bastard") to a dissection of the terrors and insecurities associated with early courtship ("First Date"). Blink 182's combination of pop smarts and endearing vulnerability dispels any notion that they're only capable of being the Adam Sandlers of punk rock.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Darren Ratner
Not too much has changed since we last left blink-182. You might hear the same snap, crackle, and pop that the trio has prided themselves on for almost ten years. There's even the continual cabbage-patch screech of Tom Delonge and support for rampant teen angst. But five albums later, these San Diego natives grab their rosy-cheek punkadelics and add a bit more of a flamboyant, passionate maturation on Take off Your Pants and Jacket. When Enema of the State leaped onto the charts in 1999, the lyrical direction was 90 percent party-boy mentality, leaving little room for traces of a growth spurt. And while we're still feeling the continual back-drip of tracks from Enema, the fresh plethora of tunes from these rambunctious Toys-R-Us rockers have more purpose than ever. With a fight-for-your-right joviality that's often irresistible, songs like "Anthem Part 2" and "Stay Together for the Kids" house a indomitable school-kid voice where a surging vapor of knockout speed chords meet wrecking-ball percussion. The meanings are bucketed and spilled, with lines like "If we're f*cked up/You're to blame" ("Anthem Part 2"). And forget about escaping lyrics such as, "I'll never talk to you again/Unless your dad 'ill suck me off," which stems from the hilarious, almost brilliant 42-second clash called "Happy Holidays, You Bastard." "First Date" and "Roller Coaster" are only a couple of their tunes that act as therapy for post-pubescent dilemma, also present on previous efforts like Enema and Dude Ranch. Each song about the rotten girlfriend or unhip parent speaks loud and often to the 2000 MTV generation. Nevertheless, the dumped-in-the-amusement-park tone and lyrical progression are sharp, if not entertaining. The band's stint on the Vans Warped Tour, with veteran punksters such as Pennywise and Rancid, has become a supreme outlet for blink-182. Take off Your Pants is one of their finest works to date, with almost every track sporting a commanding articulation and new-school punk sounds. They've definitely put a big-time notch in the win column.

This CD is just a little bit better then Enema of the State. The songs on Take off Your Pants & Jacket are good, espesically Give Me One Good Reason. This song is about people that are different and that they dont need to care or fit in... Lets just say, this CD kicks!!!

I can't believe that Blink could make such a poser album. Their like hey we're swearing for the little kids and they think its funny.I am a huge fan of everything before this album so dont get me wrong but this album is full of stupid pop so if your a true Blink fan stay away.

a lot of the other reviews seem to be saying blink are sounding more punk...i'd say the opposite. the new album is more pop/rock than punk. it is however, really good and definately worth buying, instrumentally it's a lot better than all the others.

this album is awesome; harder and faster than 'enema of the state,' just as promised. it has been playing pretty much nonstop since i bought it, and there isnt one song that i dislike. blink 182 has changed some, as they do with every album, but they've also gone back to their punk roots with this one.

i wasn't a big Blink fan until i got this cd. They really put together rock riffs with punchy basslines and vocals to blend. i play their stuff on bass all the time and i love it! Blink rocks. (period).

This is no CD that the next album turned out to be but is almost as good as the next. not as mature and deep but some songs are such as the sad "Stay Together For The Kids" about divorce, "Story of A Lonely Guy" also very depressing, and "Please Take Me Home". this is not a very clean album but i would say it is worth the money. it is about the feeling of being a teen and how good life is and how sometimes love will crush you and that stuff. very good though i must say. recommended. not for the kids though but for older teens. get it.

Blink-182 can dish out awsome cd's but I think this one is the best! I luv the song Rock Show, whenever I hear it I turn up the radio as loud as it goes!

The new blink 182 album is awesome! It has a lot of good songs like rock show and anthem part 2, and you should listen to the 40 second track happy holidays, you *******. The trio packs a punch on this album, and if yer a blink 182 fan, this is the album to buy!

As one of the biggest fans of Blink 182, I have to say that this is one of my favorite cds. They are the most unique boy group that makes you laugh everytime you see their videos. I love every single one of their songs because they are all different and I can relate to most of them. That is why I like them so much, they actually talk about things that every teenager goes through so it is easier for us to relate to them. They are three carefree guys that do what they love the most. The way they just act like themselves and enjoy it make me want to listen to them all the time. As long as they keep up the good work, I will be listening to them for quite sometime.

The wait was worth it, as Blink 182's new CD, ''Take off Your Pants and Jacket'' was a success. In an effort to return to their punk roots, Blink 182 released what may be their best CD ever. Songs such as ''Reckless Abandon'' and ''Give Me One Good Reason'' are reminiscent of the earlier Blink songs, and artistically moving tracks like ''Anthem Part 2'' and ''Stay Together For The Kids'' help to balance out the CD. Aside from that, Blink¿s idea to put different bonus tracks on each version of the CD (Red, Green, and Yellow) was a stroke of pure genius. The bonus tracks, much like the CD, range from hard hitting (¿Don¿t Tell Me That It¿s Over¿) to artistic (¿What Went Wrong¿). This CD truly has something for everyone, and is quite possibly the best Blink 182 CD yet.

Blink 182 has once again delivered an addictive CD with catchy tunes and diverse tracks. This CD is definately their best. This diverse CD can be put on repeat and be listened to for hours, as to where Enema of the State can only be listened to a couple of times through before all the songs sound the same (I'm not bashing that CD, it's another one of my favorites). Take Off Your Pants and Jacket is more parent friendly than their Live CD, however, not by much. By releasing three different CDs, the band has peeked the curiosity of its listeners; you cannot fully enjoy the CD without hearing each different track 14. The band has correctly depicted the likes of divorce and breakups, while making you laugh with the toilet trash and obscene humor. A song stuck in your head from this CD is not necessarily a horrible thing with the catchy tunes and humorous lyrics. My favorite songs are Josie, Roller Coaster, and Shut Up. Overall, this is a great CD that I would recommend for anyone who loves punk.

Blink-182 my favorite band in this cd almost completely converting back to punk-rock which were there better days(cheshire cat, dude ranch) which makes me personally happy becuase the campy pop-rock was a little to wussy for me and the idea of having 3 different limited edition versions marketing genious, i personaly bought the cd the first day it came out and want to here the other versions i also truly like the idea that this cd has many messages in it about kids and parenthood possibly not the most appropriate way of putting it but it works and it sends a good message along with a silly one.
