Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanna E. Henshon
Have you ever wanted to ride a horse? Girls who love horses will have the chance to imagine themselves riding freely through the pages of this book, attending riding classes with Sasha Silver as she begins her studies at Canterwood Crest Academy, one of the nation's premier riding and academic schools. When Sasha arrives on campus, she is nervous about fitting in. In fact, it's not a smooth transition. On the first day, her horse Charm causes an accident when he breaks free and runs off. In science class, Sasha struggles to remember answers to summer reading questions. But soon Sasha is riding confidently and making friends; she quickly finds her footing at Canterwood Crest. Then it comes time to make the top riding team, and Sasha wonders how true her friendships really are. When Sasha shows her riding skills, several of her schoolmates become jealous. Will Sasha rise to the occasion and make the advanced riding team by the end of the first semester? Or will the pressure of attending an elite academy and riding at the national level be too much? Girls who love horses will enjoy this and other books in the "Canterwood Crest" series. Reviewer: Suzanna E. Henshon, Ph.D.

    Fantabulous book!

I lovelovelove the entire Canterwood Crest series, but decided to write a review on this book in particular because it is the book that started it all. Spectacularly written, intriguing, kept me reading. After I finished the first book, I had to get the second one right away! This book is great for ages ten to even fifteen. I love Canterwood Crest so much, and I highly recommend that you buy this book so that you will be able to enjoy them as much as I do.

    Happy Reading!

    ~LilMissReader

P.S. I recommend every Canterwood Crest book, but you are only allowed to say five books that you recommend, so I said the first five after this book.

    Great start!

Take the Reins: It took me a little bit to track down this book, but I was happy I did.
Sasha Silver is ready for more. She's enrolled in Canterwood Crest, a serious riding school. But in the first hour, she looses control of her frighten horse - causing an accidental spill. In doing so, she made her first enemy. Luckily, Sasha adores her roommate, Paige, who isn't involved in the equestrian side of school. Canterwood Crest is a huge step up from her previous riding experiences. Sasha hopes that she can live up to the school's reputation and her riding instructors expectations. After her first die, it's clear that Sasha can handle the riding portion of school. However, Heather's not used to sharing the spotlight. She senses competition from Sasha and it becomes her personal mission to take Sasha down. Sasha never dreamed she's have to deal with mean girls on top of challenging classes, long riding lessons, and competing to make the advance riding team. She's determined to come out on top, but first she has to go through Heather.

This series is a Saddle Club meets the Clique in a seriously fun and addicting read. Sasha could be your best friend: she's smart, but relaxing and knows how to have a good time. Plus she's determined and can hold her own against Heather. While she might not always like Heather (or her comments), she can sympathize with her. She's a great character that shows depth and wisdom.

Canterwood Crest: Take the Reins (Book 1)

Here is yet another example of Jessica Burkhart's natural talent and voice. Canterwood Crest: Take the Reins is the first book in the Canterwood Crest Series. It combines horses, drama, and lip gloss together in a way that catches the reader and draws them in instantly. It is entertaining, absorbing, and funny. Jessica Burkhart's unique and captivating voice brings the CC characters to life. The CC girls are relatable and fascinating with real-life problems, thoughts, actions, and situations. Every character is unique and fun. This book is the perfect recipe with a mix of good characters, fun horses, and drama filled situations (but always with a touch of humor). Jessica Burkhart may easily be one of best tween/teen writers in the world. She really knows how to make the books fun, yet dramatic; serious, yet funny; horsey, yet not overly horsey. She has an amazing gift and writes with a voice that will take you over and draw you in effortlessly. I always am excited for the next book and they have never failed to thrill me. Here is my take on Canterwood Crest: Take the Reins:

12-year-old Sasha Silver has just been accepted into the elite Canterwood Crest Academy. After leaving her small town, Sasha instantly creates 3 enemies when her horse gets loose and causes a fall. She makes 3 new friends luckily and they help her through the school and riding issues. She makes it onto the intermediate team with her three enemies, the Trio, and her BFF, Callie. The ringleader of the Trio, Heather Fox, never stops getting Sasha in trouble. Will Sasha give into the pressure or will she stand up to her enemies and earn her footing at Canterwood Crest Academy.

To tell you the truth this book totally, 100% surprised me. I got this book because it was virtually the only horse book I haven't read yet. After the second I opened it I was thrilled! I love Sasha, Callie, Paige, the Trio, and all of the CCA gang. I didn't think these books could get better but the second one is even more amazing, so if you have any doubt about this series you NEED to read on. I would recommend this book to girls, ages 9-15. Even if you aren't horse crazy I bet you will love this book! Find out more in Canterwood Crest: Chasing Blue and READ, READ, READ!

    Its ok...

I love this book and i totally recommend it! It is not one of my fav books and I do think the author is not trying her hardest to give the reader a clearer vision. Jessica Burkhart needs more twists and turns AFTER she gives a descriptive view of the characters and their past lives. Charm got into trouble WAY too early in the book! Maybe when trying out or watching a lesson and trying to become friends with Heather would have been a better time for Charm to get into trouble. i still do admire the book but i have to say i have read books VERY similar so this book.
