Hercule Poirot fans will be pleased to hear Hugh Fraser, who plays Captain Hastings on PBS's Mystery! and A&E's Poirot, recount Christie's intriguing 1948 novel (published in the U.S. as There Is a Tide). The celebrated Belgian sleuth visits the sleepy English village of Warmsley Vale to check into the background of Gordon Cloade, supposedly a victim of the London Blitz. He had wed an attractive young widow, the former Mrs. Underhay, now the sole possessor of the Cloade family fortune. The deceased's sister-in-law told Poirot that "spirits" informed her that the widow's first husband is still among the living, raising suspicions about Cloade's demise. Fraser's tone at once reassures listeners that, just as on television, they are in capable hands. He does a fine job creating a variety of character voices, distinguishing one from another with clarity but without excessive flamboyance.     Taken At The Flood is an outstanding Agatha Christe that is seldom read.

    I have been reading Agatha Christie mysteries for years, and this one is seldom kept in stock at book stores. I think the title is the reason the book hasn't become as popular as some of her other books. It seems a lot of Agatha Christie Books get retitled, and I think this one would benefit by doing that. It is a really good story that is very appropriate for these difficult economic times. A wealthy man makes sure all his extended family is well taken care of financially for decades. Late in life, he marries a much younger woman. He unexpectedly dies, and suddenly she controls the financial fate of a family she barely met. Needless to say, this is a good premise, and each person in the extended family has motive to kill her.

    I decided to spend the summer reading Agatha Christie novels that I don't have in my library. I highly recommend this one because it is as good as the best of her mysteries. It was also published as "There Is A Tide" which isn't a much better title. Her choice of the extended family's name was far better (The Cloades) and much more imaginative than either title. Give this one a read. It is worth your time.

    The Little Village of 'Warmsley Vale' is not as warm and inviting as its title!

    As many of her books this one is quite well written.The book demonstrates that almost everyone has a weakness to money, but can they resist it? How do the village inhabitants of Warmsley Vale react when they no longer have money from relatives to depend on? This book is a true test of human character. Another innovative piece de resistance!!!

    Wealthy, Young, Widow Dies!!

    Gorden Cloade has died and with his death died his financial suport of his family members.The cause of the mess is the mans new wife Rosaleen.His old will has been invalidated by his marage and he never made a new one.All the family members need money badly and any one of them may do something desperate.But is one of them desperate enough to murder?

    one of my A.C favourites!

    I would rate this book in my (mysteries) top 5 for it's different plot. It would have been one of the most difficult and infact unsolved case, but for H.Poirot. The best part about his book is normally you see Poiort saying complex is simple but this one was apparently so simple and yet one of the most complicated mysteries by Agatha Christie. You will know what I mean in the end. I liked the end apart from the culprit being caught.
