Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Bestselling novelist Barbara Freethy (Don't Say a Word) has another crowd-pleasing page-turner in the first of a tricky romantic suspense series. After a whirlwind courtship, San Francisco artist Kayla is about to fulfill her dream of marrying Mr. Right and starting a family-but on the wedding night, her dream man abandons her. Meanwhile, engineer Nick Granville returns home to San Francisco after a few months working in Africa to find his house lived in and his bank accounts plundered. Turns out these two strangers were duped by the same man: handsome, blond, smooth-talking Evan Chadwick. Unable to get the attention of the SFPD, the two marks take it upon themselves to track down Evan and get back what's theirs. As the clues accumulate, so do the smoldering glances between broad-shouldered Nick and curvy Kayla, but Freethy's sex scenes have a reportorial feel that may leave readers cold. Evan's cat and mouse game, however, should hook suspense fans and carry them into the next volume-as Evan says, "the game will be over when I say it's over," and this is just his first play. As a fan, I've read all of Barbara Freethy's books and loved each one. Taken was no exception.

I stumbled upon this book when it had been left at the place I was staying on the beach, and was oddly compelled to read it. This was the first Freethy book I had ever read, but I finished it in one short weekend vacation. I couldn't resist the story... or the author! I went out and started a collection of Ms. Freethy's books, immediately reading them all and lending them to my best friend so we'd be able to discuss them. I now have eight of the books and am still collecting!

This is the first Barbara Freethy book I've read. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to the expectations I had based on other reviews. The book started out well with a great premise of stolen identity. But then it went straight downhill from there. I had to ignore logic throughout the book and try to imagine scenarios that just really didn't ring true to me. For example, would a smart woman who married a man after only knowing him for 3 weeks, whose husband disappeared on their wedding night, really fall into an intense physical relationship with a different man a mere two weeks later? Not too believable for me. The lead male character had potential to be interesting, but became predictably stumbling and bumbling throughout the book. Neither lead character seemed too bright. The police/FBI also seemed dumbed down. The ending was lame at best. Really? Could the police be so stupid? I doubt I'll buy any other Barbara Freethy books. Darn. I was hoping I'd found another author to enjoy.

I was pleasantly suprised by this book. I was expecting a quick read and I got an awesome, well writen book. The chemistry between the two is terrific. I picked this up at the store and came home and started it. Before I knew it, it wsa 3am and I was finishing the book. I could not put it down. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. It's very easy to add her to the writing likes of Linda Howard and Sandra Brown. Way to go, Ms. Freethy. I can't wait for the next book in this series. Thanks for keeping it going!!

Seems like if you took the trouble to write a book you would include an ending- a conclusion. What a sorry way to push the next book- by not finishing the firsf,

The story line is interesting, but with every thought and emotion explained in detail over and over again it seemed laborious. This discouraged me from reading more of Freethy's books.

The love story was pretty predictable, but the mystery in the story keeps the reader guessing. The ending left much of the mystery unsolved, to be (hopefully) revealed in the sequel. Very enjoyable read.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It held my attention throughout and, with that cliffhanger ending, I will be getting her next book.

I love Barbara Freethy books but splitting this one into two parts took away from it a bit. It was a good read just not one of my favorites of hers.

Kayla Sheridan marries, but instead of spending an evening of bliss, her groom Nick Granville vanishes. The stunned bride visits her spouse¿s home to confront him, but the man who greets her is not her husband though he claims and proves that he is Nick Granville. Both are taken aback as Nick, who has been overseas for months on a bridge construction project realizes someone has taken identity theft to a new level. The thief lived in Nick¿s home, spent his money, and married in his name. --- Already suspicious as to the identity of the conman, Kayla¿s description affirms Nick¿s believe that his college days' enemy Evan Chadwick pulled a stunt. He can understand why him, but neither Nick nor Kayla can figure out why her. As both know he still stalks them, the duo agree they need to comprehend why Evan picked her because he would not have used her if she did not fit into the equation. --- This is an exhilarating romantic suspense with the emphasis on the amateur sleuth investigation conducted by the two targets. Barbara Freethy leaves clues to what is going on especially the real link between Evan and Kayla, yet the fascination is trying to separate out those that provide information from the red herrings. The lead couple is a delightful teaming while the villain serves as a matchmaking cat toying with the two mice he brought together. Fans will enjoy this tense thriller. --- Harriet Klausner

I thoroughly enjoyed Taken as I do with all of Barbara Freethy books. When I start reading a book by her it is hard for me to put it down. Just when you think the mystery is solved she throws in another. Great author.
