Overview

This time last year, I could go weeks without seeing another mage. In mage society I was an unknown and, all in all, that was how I liked it. It’s hard to say what changed. Whatever it was, I got involved in the magical world again and started getting myself a reputation.

Alex Verus’s insights into the future used to be the best-kept secret in London. Now, with the aid of his apprentice, Luna, his unique investigative talents are all the rage. He just has to be careful about picking his employers, because everyone—even the beautiful woman who practically begs him to run security for a prestigious tournament—has motives that can be hard to predict. And Alex doesn’t do unpredictable.

But his latest gig just might be impossible. Apprentices have been vanishing without a trace—and someone on the Council could be involved. Alex has no evidence, no witnesses, and no suspects. All he knows is that someone is keeping tabs on him. And after assassins target Luna’s classmate, Alex sees that he doesn’t know the half of it—and that he could be the next to disappear.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Jacka’s excellent third urban fantasy thriller starring British freelance diviner Alex Verus (after Cursed) features magical dueling with prestige and lives at stake. The White Stone tournament promises to offer harmless combat for eager apprentices of Light and Dark mages as representatives of both groups ask Alex to investigate the recent disappearance of several trainees. As Alex grapples with the mystery, he finds himself protecting one young woman from human thugs and supernatural assassins, uneasily inspecting the remote mansion where the contest will be held, and dodging his own implacable enemies. In short, Alex does what he usually does: look after vulnerable people, skeptically evaluate the Light mages’ smug self-righteousness, and keep half a step ahead of violent death. The action is fast and smart, playing with thriller conventions so that while readers get excitement they also are encouraged to think about what magic might mean in human terms. A superb book in an outstanding, provocative series. (Sept.)

Racheal nodded and listened as jack told her evreything.
"This may seem weird....but your my daughter. You see, rupunzel and i met and fell in love. So one day you came along and evrething was just perfect. Then pitch figured out you existed, so i had no choice but to give you to the orphanage. Rupunzle and i have watched over you ever since. " She nodded and stared at the floor. Jack tucked some of her hair behind her ear. "You have her brown hair....and my blue eyes....." Bunny rolled his eyes. "Im gonna vom<_>it if you keep this up..." Racheal stood and sighed.
She was the daughter of jack frost.
Racheal found her voice. "So you had no idea what my powers are? Healing or frost?" Jack shook his head. "We'll find out racheal. Together. I promise pitch wont harm you." Racheal nodded and stood up. "I can do one thing thats not....normal." Jack just watched as racheal put her hand on an elf and concentrated. Pure ice formed around the elf, freezeing him solid.
to be continued

    Another great book

The more I read the more I like. This book was another great adventure of Alex. You get to see the regulars but also get introduced to some new players. There is a lot of magic and action in this tale and it keeps you glued to the edge of your seat from the beginning. Luna continues to mature and become more confident with her "powers". We get to see other types of magic that adds a lot to the story. Thanks for another great tale. I can't wait for the next!
