The Ancient, one of eight otherworlders, came to earth and created vampire sons when they procreated with native women possessing the breedmark. He escaped captivity and held former Alaskan state trooper Jenna Darrow for hours. He did things to her mind and body that will have long term repercussions. As she nears death, he places an implant inside her; which winds within her skull and spinal column. After the Order vampire police rescued her, medical experts in Boston determine the implant is part of her body having altered her DNA.
She proves strong, faster, and can do things humans cannot. Throughout her ordeal, Brock takes care of her especially with relieving her pain. He begins to have feelings that he does not want as she can never be his breadmate so he rationalizes to himself this is only sex. While the Boston order tries to figure out what the implant is, the vampires fight their biggest enemy Dragos who has an army of Gen-Y warriors. The breedmates fight their adversaries as powerfully as their vampire husbands do fending off Dragos's attacks and trying to figure out where Dragos and his army are.
Lara Adrian is one of the top urban fantasists on the market today with her Midnight Breed series (see Shades of Midnight). The current entry is fast-paced and moves forward the overarching plot yet insures Taken by Midnight contains a complete enjoyable story line and three dimensional characters including besides the lead protagonists the villain. Brock and Jenna have experienced first hand tragedy and trauma, which brings realism as their relationship teeters because of their respective pasts. Ms. Adrian has written another fabulous thriller that goes on this reviewer's shelf with all the rest of the works written by this very talented author.

OK, I love this series! I love love love this series. However, this book was almost impossible to read because I disliked Jenna so much I had to keep putting the book down. Jenna's conduct is so out of line I detested her by the time she had managed to break out of the sanctuary of The Order, doing and causing destructive damage on the way out and during her captivity. All the warriors putting their lives on the line to rescue her from the results of her childish actions. Her actions were those of a complete idiot twit! Putting everyone at risk and acting like a complete selfish brainless idiot. By a quarter of the way through the book my thoughts were, "Damn! Lara Adrian, it is way too bad you did not have the ancient just drain the whiney nit wit "b****" dry.". The reasons I dislike this book are numerous, but they all come back to one thing - Jenna. Jenna is the only Breed Mate who lacks strength (other than what is evolving from her transplant) and pales in comparison to the talents and characters of all the other Breed Mates. Jenna cannot begin hit the high water mark set by Renata as far as strengths physically and otherwise. This was the least interesting love story, but not because of Brock, who is able to meet the high water mark of his fellow warriors in the previous stories.
Sorry Lara Adrian. I really did not like this one. I hope the next females in the following books have the character and intelligence and strenght all the previous Breedmates of The Order possess. The fact Jenna is altering because of the Ancient's transplant was interesting and I hope Jenna is a more sympathetic and admirable and rational character in the next books. I really struggled with this one. There was also a lack of continuity in Jenna's character and her story. She goes from shrewish one scene to supportive involved mate in the next scene, like a "deus ex machina"! Jenna just did not work for me, combined with all the other issues such as the lack of continuity, and a sense that this book was kind of cobbled together to create the story. I will still buy the next one the day it comes out though.

I Also Recommend:
I have read all of the Lara Adrian Midnight Breed series. I was waiting with anitcipation for this release and was not disappointed. I have always liked the snippets of Brock that we have seen and was excited to find out his story. In the previous installment it was apparent that a relationship was developing between Brock and Jenna, and I was excited to read. I love the way development and growth of the characters from book to book in the series. There have been other "Breedmates" that were introduced that I did not like at all (Renata). This was not the cases with the two main characters of this story. I could relate to Jenna and appreciated her tenacity and strength. I love the way Lara Adrian lays out a story for the reader. This was an inticing, relaxing and capturing read. Of course the end is the beginning and we have to wait again for the next installment.

Midnight Breed Series #8: I loved this book. Though it started off super slow when it picked up it got near impossible to put down. It made me think though, how will it work between a human and a vampire???Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

I find that Lara Adrian has written the best of the parnormal vampire series. There is not one book in the whole series that you would not totally enjoy. The Male and Female lead characterss are all well developed. Each book is new and refeshing with it's own twist telling the story of each Breed male and the counter part.
I am to lazy to write a review for each book but even the short story is well developed and doesn't just end flat. She is a very very good author. I could ready a new one ASAP. Not sure how she well develop the next book as they to races now know about each other hope it doesn't weaken the story.
I would rate all of the books 5 star!

This book took me no time to read. This was such a great book! And I love the way it was left opened since we dont know what is happening....even though I think I know whats gonna happen!
From the beginning you see the protectiveness of Brock and his feelings for her. I loved the way she is so human and not wanting to love him but it happens and you want to watch it unfold. They fact that she is not a breedmate makes it even more innteresting because they have to bond like "normal" couples.
I am so excited to see where their story goes!!!! Thank you Lara for making such a wonderful series!!! All I can say is write faster!!!
