Adair was born in Negril, Jamaica to Preston Morton a deacon, and Martha Morton who helped their daughter by teaching her  the book of Psalms and poetry as a child. Her family moved to Jacksonville, Florida when Adair was college student.  She attended school there, including several years of college, before she moved to Georgia.

In 1970, Adair received her Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1976, she received her master's degree in creative writing and in 1985, she returned to Florida school to earn her Ph.D. Today she is a grandmother of 10, mother of 5 and sits on her plan filled porch with her husband and family sharing pleasantries, mint julep tea and salutations with her southern neighbors in Haiti.
