Children's LiteratureThis book, which looks at taking care of the ears, is part of the "Keeping Healthy" series. It uses a picture book format of 24 pages and combines simple text with large format photographs to present basic information on how ears enable us to hear, how hearing is checked, how to take care of the ears at home, and the benefits of good ear care. A simple graphic accompanies one of the photos describing the anatomy of the ear and the way in which sounds waves travel to the brain. The book describes a visit to an audiologist and how a doctor checks the health of the ears. Good ear care habits are presented, such as wearing earplugs when swimming and turning the volume down when using earphones. The closing pages present a glossary of words related to the parts and function of the ears, "Read More," a list of referrals to other sources of information, a list of Internet sites, and an index. The children in each photograph represent a variety of ethnic and racial groups. This book would make a worthy addition to a kindergarten or lower elementary school classroom science and/or healthcare library. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 4 to 8.
