Children's LiteratureThis book is part of the "Keeping Healthy" series for early readers. It presents personal care information in a 24-page, picture book format of brief text alternating with large photographs. The way that the eye functions is presented simply. A graphic describes the pupil of the eye. Several pages describe a visit to the eye-care specialist, who prescribes glasses, if needed, as well as the care provided by a medical doctor. The book describes the importance of using enough light when reading and the importance of using sunglasses. The benefit of taking breaks from close work, such as looking at a computer screen, and the overall health advantages of good personal care of the eyes, are emphasized. The closing pages include a glossary of words related to the parts and function of the eyes, "Read More," a list of referrals to other sources of information, a list of Internet sites, and an index. The children in each of the photographs represent a variety of ethnic and racial groups. This book would make a worthy addition to the science and/or healthcare library in a kindergarten or lower elementary school classroom. 2005, Capstone Press, Ages 4 to 8.
