Overview

Peyton Muldoon needs a man bad.

No, not that way. What she needs is a trainer for her struggling stud ranch. And only a true life horse whisperer will do, a man with the right touch and real know how.

Redford Callahan's on a hot streak.

Not in the sack. But with the ranch owners who hire him to gentle their animals without breaking their spirit. He can pick and choose his next gig, so he'll be damned if he's going to waste his time on a mismanaged operation like the M-Star. Not until Peyton sashays into his motel room one night to make him a deal he can't refuse. Now Red's days as a loner are numbered and he's starting to wonder if there's one spitfire he won't be able to tame. . .

"Sassy and sexy. . .a welcome new voice!" --USA Today bestselling author Donna Kauffman

Murray (The Game of Love) introduces readers to an authentic setting with likable characters in this promising contemporary Western series starter. Peyton Muldoon has a lot on her plate. The family ranch is struggling, thanks to her late mother’s mismanagement. Her siblings are scattered to who knows where, and horse trainer extraordinaire Redford Callahan is too sexy for her peace of mind. In order to get her ranch back on solid footing, she ignores the attraction, swallows her pride, and offers Red the head trainer position at M-Star Ranch. Red clamps down on his lust and takes the job, against his better judgment. When the two hotheads aren’t arguing, they work well together and are explosive in bed. Despite Red’s reputation as a commitment-phobic wanderer, he accepts his feelings for Peyton early on, and is gentle and patient as he earns his passage through her defenses. The question is whether Peyton will trust Red to stay and accept that she can’t control everything. It’s a tall order for anyone to take that leap of faith, and especially so for Peyton. (Jan.)
Kirkus Reviews
Horse whisperer Redford Callahan has been trying to ignore his attraction to ranch owner Peyton Muldoon since he first laid eyes on her, and some instinct tells him he needs to keep his distance, or she might actually wind up taming him--a good intention, until she asks him to come on board as her full-time trainer. Peyton Muldoon will fight to her last dying breath to rebuild her father's ranch and horse-breeding business, and as much as she'd like to deny it, she knows that Red Callahan is the best man to help her do it. She also knows that with his stellar reputation and her ranch's decline under her mother's watch, the fact that he'd even consider working for her is a godsend. When he actually accepts the offer, Peyton's elated, and she's determined to keep her sizzling attraction to the distracting man under wraps. So she's flummoxed when it becomes clear that the sensual temptation is mutual. Ranching is a man's world, though, and since her mother barely kept the business afloat while gaining a reputation as a floozy, Peyton is a little sensitive to the thought of sleeping with her employee, especially with the added deterrent that Red isn't known for staying in one place for long. As desire smolders and the business stakes get higher, they are confronted with the added pressure of family complications. Peyton's sister, brother and nephew will all come to nest in the homestead, while their mother's shiftless ex-lover and Red's malicious father will threaten everyone's well-being and happiness. With good pace and an appealing plot that explores family dysfunction as well as a hot, conflicted romance, this book succeeds in keeping romance fans engaged and invested.

Kat Murray spends her days surrounded by hunky alpha male heroes…at least in her mind. In real life, she’s a one-hero kind of woman, blessed to be married to her own real-life Marine. When she’s not chasing her daughter or their lovable-but-stupid Goldendoodle around the house, she’s deep in her own fictional world, building another love story. As a military wife, she would tell you where she lives…but by the time you read this, she’ll have moved again.

Story, character and writing all were very good... Didn't quite reach a 5 star but I did enjoy it and read Book 2 Bucking the Rules and will read Busting Loose (due out in December)... I like cowboy romance every once in a while and this series gets the job done... Love Peyton and hope she and Red (short for Redford) wind up married somewhere down the road.

Peyton Muldoon is trying to resurrect for family’s horse farm. Although Peyton has been the only family member that has stayed to care for the ranch, she discovers that the ranch was left to her and her two siblings. Fighting to rebuild the ranch’s reputation, Peyton realize that she must ask for help from a famous trainer, Redford (Red) Callahan.  Red Callahan is one of the most sought after horse trainers in the business, giving him an unlimited amount of job offers. When this tom-boy with attitude shows up requesting his help at the M-Star, he is instantly interested in more than training horses. He knows he should run the other way but something is pulling him toward M-Star and Peyton Muldoon. This is a sweet story about family, trust and finding love. The characters are strong, courageous and although they have lots of family issues...they genuinely love each other. In the end, Taking the Reins was a quick read, with a great heartwarming story and just the right amount of steamy romantic encounters. I do look forward to Peyton’s siblings Bea’s and Trace’s stories. 4 stars! This ARC copy of Taking the Reins was given to me by Netgalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. in exchange for an honest review. Publish Date December 24, 2012.
