As she catches up on local gossip, Beatrix learns of the demise of a longtime resident, Hugh Wickstead, killed by a falling tree limb in the woods. Was Hugh the victim of a curse after he unearthed ancient treasure? Of course, the animals have their own stories to tell, and Beatrix turns to them for help in the investigation. Familiar creatures pop up along the way, including Pickles, a fox terrier that belonged to Hugh and may hold the secret to his master's death. Susan Wittig Albert grew up on a farm in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley. A former professor of English and a university administrator and vice president, she now lives with her husband, Bill, in the country outside of Austin, Texas. In addition to the China Bayles mysteries, she writes a Victorian mystery series along with her husband under the pseudonym of Robin Paige.

"My first job was selling ladies' undies at Woolworth's for 35 cents an hour in Danville, Illinois."

I learned to garden from my mother, who thought that the most important thing you did every spring was to plant the potatoes. I learned to read from my father, who never planted a potato in his life. Somehow, I managed to create a life and make a living between these two extremes. Happily, I haven't had to go back to selling undies. Not yet, anyway."

"I love living in the country with Bill, two black Labs, and a black cat. I'd rather read a book or write one than do just about anything else in the world, except maybe for gardening and sitting in a bathtub full of hot, hot water and bubbles. Or knitting, spinning, weaving, dyeing -- I'm a fiber-arts fanatic."

    A surprisingly humorous and enjoyable view of the world of Beatrix Potter! (fiction/mystery)

    This is the 5th in a series of 6 books set in early 1900's England and is loosely based on some time Beatrix Potter spent in Lake Country. Everything about the books transport you to that time and place. The descriptions of the characters and locations, the events, and even the writing style help you believe that animals really can speak and that all Ms. Albert's characters are real.

    Absolutely delightful series

    I have been a fan of Beatrix Potter since I was a child and Susan Wittag Albert's series has been a delightful continuation. She has created a whole new world around Miss Potter and her characters which both my sister and I love (she is 78 and I am 70). It is a world of fantasy that seems so very normal and you know everything is going to turn out well for the good characters! I have managed to find all of the books, even after my book clubs stopped offering them - and I will continue to check my other resources so I don't miss one! They are a welcome relief from what is being offered by too many authors these days!

    This is a fun entry in a delightfully charming series

    Her reception from her disapproving parents is so icy Beatrix Potter decides to cut off her visit and leave London immediately. She returns to her home Hill Top Farm in the Lake District. Ironically she gets trapped in a blizzard that reminds her of the frozen welcome of her family.-------------- Beatrix learns that neighbor Hugh Wickstead was killed in an accident when a tree limb fell on him. Some locals believe he died due to the curse of an ancient treasure trove he found. Beatrix knows humans are inane allowing their imagination to come up with ridiculous stories. She turns to the more honest animals to help her investigate how Hugh died.------------- The latest Potter Cottage Tale (see THE TALE OF CUCKOO BROW WOOD and THE TALE OF HAWTHORN HOUSE) is an engaging historical mystery that uses personification to combine fact and fantasy into a fine mystery. The fun in the TALE OF BRIAR BANK lies with that convergence as Beatrix talks to the late Hugh¿s fox terrier Pickles co-star as a store owner in THE TALE OF GINGER AND PICKLES. This is a fun entry in a delightfully charming series.------------- Harriet Klausner

    Not her best effort

    I have read and enjoyed each Cottage Tale, up to this book. I enjoy reading of what day-to-day life might have been like for Beatrix Potter and the mysteries/murders have been well-incorporated into this storyline.

    But this book was really not on the level of the first 4 and having a dragon as 'the villain' was more in keeping with a fantasy rather than a murder mystery.
