The Tale of Despereaux tells the story of several unlikely heroes: Despereaux, a brave mouse banished to the dungeon for speaking with a human; Roscuro, a good-hearted rat who loves light and soup, but is exiled to darkness; Pea, a Princess in a gloomy castle who is prisoner to her father's grief; and Mig, a servant girl who longs to be a Princess, but is forced to serve the jailer. The perfect companion to the movie, this work adapts the motion picture screenplay to the graphic novel form. When seafaring rat Roscuro visits the kingdom of Dor, he accidentally frightens the queen and she drowns in her soup bowl. Grief-stricken, the king bans soup and rats from Dor, an act that depresses his soup-loving subjects. Into this gloomy kingdom is born Despereaux, a little mouse with big ears and boundless courage. Ostracized for not being a coward like the other mice, Despereaux explores the castle and befriends both the king's daughter Princess Pea and Roscuro, who has been in hiding since the soup "incident." But when Roscuro tries to apologize to the princess for his mistake, her angry reaction fills the rat with hate—so much hate, in fact, that he teams up with a disgruntled servant girl and kidnaps the princess. Soon, it's up to Despereaux to save the princess—and get the rats and humans of the kingdom to forgive each other. A humorous and often stirring fairy tale of heroism and mercy, this graphic novel is all the more appealing thanks to artwork that mimics the movie's character designs.
