Most every nation has a foundational story or epic poem. For the Japanese, the "Tale of the Heike" is this exact text. Goes into detail of the rivalry between the militaristic Taira and Minamoto clans-well worth the read. Very detailed and poetic...any course on Japan should involve this text. Go get it!
