Overview

He is notorious.

Lord Simon Roxbury is a godsend to gossip columnists everywhere. This notorious rake has recently been caught in an extremely compromising position by none other than The London Weekly's Lady of Distinction. Rumor also has it that Lord R received an ultimatum: be wed or be penniless.

She is scandalous.

As A Lady of Distinction, Lady Julianna Somerset typically reports on other people's scandals, but soon she finds herself embroiled in a very public battle with an irate Lord Roxbury—one that leaves her reputation in tatters and her position at The Weekly on the line.

Together they're... respectable?

With no other choice available, these two enemies unite in a marriage of convenience to rescue both their reputations and secure his fortune. With their rivals intent on revealing the charade, Lady Julianna and Lord Simon inevitably surrender to temptation. It may just be a love match after all . . .

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This sexy historical romp opens with a bang, as 19th-century gossip columnist Julianna, the prematurely widowed Lady Somerset, stumbles upon what she thinks is a taboo-breaking affair involving Lord Roxbury, an enigmatic rake who has bedded half of London (the female half). The scandalous report that Julianna pens in her London Weekly column quickly lands her in hot water with Roxbury. As the only son of a wealthy earl, he's just been given an ultimatum: marry in a month or lose the family fortune. Just when he needs his reputation the most, Julianna has crushed it to bits with tabloids accusations. With the clock ticking, Roxbury's roving, increasingly desperate eye turns in the lady of letter's direction, giving her—and society—quite a shock. "Nothing could impel me to marry him," Julianna protests. "I will not bind myself to another degenerate rake..." Rodale (A Groom of One's Own) has an intimate understanding of aristocratic England and a particular flair for rendering sumptuous period details, lingering sensually on hot-house gardens of imported blooming flowers, for instance. With one delicious plot twist upon another, Rodale's latest will keep readers guessing until the last bud is plucked. (Apr. 26)

    Recommended fun

The widow Lady Somerset is the "Lady of Distinction," the woman behind a prominent gossip column. And when she reports that Lord Roxbury was seen in an inappropriate embrace with a man at the same time his father decides to cut him off unless he marries with in the next month, the sexual tension between between the two begins. Neither character is perfect but they are both genuine. Lord Roxbury is a rake but kind. Lady Somerset is a gossip but her column is a way she discovered to survive financially after her husband's death. It was a fun quick read and though a second book in a series, this reviewer hadn't read the first and did not feel lost, but I think I might now track down a copy of the first and I look forward to the next book.

A good romance with a 'who did it' plot

The story flows nicely and I liked the plot. It is more of a PG romance as it doesn't have much in the way of steamy sex scenes but a good read.

    more from this reviewer

    a zany historical

In 1823 in London, the weekly A Lady of Distinction reports of the latest scandalous affair of Lord R, who has slept with much of the aristocratic female population; this time he is allegedly caught with the taboo of the "stronger sex". His outraged father warns Roxbury that he marry within one month or accept poverty.

Roxbury, Simon Sinclair had planned on dying as a wealthy bachelor. He blames his latest mess on gossip columnist Lady Julianna Somerset. As the rival A Man About Town places Lady Julianna in the hot sit due to her coverage of Lord R, raging Roxbury knows his time is running out on him so he decides to go after the widow who placed him in fiscal jeopardy. Though attracted to the rake, Julianna vows never again with another philander, but he insists a marriage of convenience is the only shelter for both of them.

The latest The Writing Girl's Regency romance (see A Groom of One's Own) is a zany historical that will remind the audience of the madcap 1930s movies like His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby. The story line is fast-paced as Julianna has a penchant for gossip and trouble while Simon finds she rocks his world. Fans will enjoy this humorous tale with a touch of identity mystery,
