Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This richly illustrated collection of selections from far-flung lands celebrates storytelling, an art that preserves songs and stories from long ago. Each contributor shares a tale originating with a different culture; since they are storytellers rather than authors, they try to capture in print the splendid sounds and vibrancy of oral language. Through some are more successful than others, each brief, lively narrative will absorb tellers, listeners and readers. An Indian tale describes the making of the first pair of shoes; a Chinese fable reveals the reason for stars in the night skies; a Native American legend explains the existence of rattlesnakes; an English storyteller introduces the creature known as the Hedley Kow: ``it's not a cow, that's for sure--well, only sometimes.'' Williams's endearing, expressive vignettes--some as spot illustrations, some as ribbons of color framing the text--brighten the pages while reflecting the mood and setting of each tale. The oral tradition is alive and well in this evocative, diverse anthology. Ages 5-9. (Oct.)

K-Gr 4-- A collection of stories that ranges from fair to ridiculously bad. In her introduction, Medlicott states that most of the selections are very old, yet they all have individual copyright dates of 1991, and none are listed as retellings. The illustrations are colorful, but unfortunately they are just as awkward as the stories and add nothing. There are too many excellent collections available to waste time on this one. --George Delalis, Oakland Public Library, CA

. This collection of tales from India, Scotland, Kenya, the Caribbean, and other lands has much promise; it offers 15 satisfying stories from the oral tradition with a fresh flavor, perfect for telling or reading aloud. The simple and direct language gives the stories the feeling of immediacy, regardless of setting. Each story has instant eye appeal, too. Warm, folksy illustrations curl around many of the pages, snuggling the text and giving the impression of being a real part of the story rather than just decoration. Whether about kings or commoners, wise men or fools, these are stories children will ask to hear again and again
