Overview

Rachel Renee Russell serves up more laughs and adorable illustrations in the next installment of the bestselling DORK DIARIES series.

Nikki Maxwell has been doing everything she can to keep everyone at school from learning the truth--that she's there on scholarship in exchange for her Dad working as the school's exterminator. The last thing Nikki needs is having her friends and--worst case scenario--her crush, Brandon, associating her with the humongous roach on top of her Dad's van! Now it looks like her secret could be about to come out, and Nikki's willing to go to any zany and wacky length to prevent that from happening. The timing seems perfect when a major talent competition is announced with a school scholarship offered as the top prize. Nikki loves to sing and dance and now she gets to have tons of fun with her friends while competing for a chance to free her Dad from his obligation! (And free herself from all that potential damage to her reputation . . .) Once again, hijinks and misunderstandings aplenty ensue, as well as more hilarious and heartwarming moments with Nikki and her friends.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Welsh
In the third book of the "Dork diaries" series, Nikki's back and struggling with her archnemesis, Makenzie. Things get crazy when Makenzie posts an embarrassing video of Nikki on YouTube. This could totally ruin Nikki's reputation at school! More importantly, it could ruin Nikki's chances with her crush, Brandon! Making matters worse, Nikki is forced to compete in a talent show to try to win a scholarship so she can afford to stay in the prestigious private school she attends. Of course, Makenzie is trying to sabotage her at every turn by stealing members of her dance team and writing "cancelled" on Nikki's recruiting posters. Will Nikki be able to outsmart Makenzie and win the talent show? Will she lose Brandon to Makenzie? Read on to see if the underdog prevails! This book would appeal to reluctant readers, particularly girls. There is frequent text talk (e.g., OMG, BFF), as well as illustrations that take up most of every other page. Thus, even though the book is 311 pages, the text only accounts for approximately one half of those pages, making the text that of the average chapter book. Mixed in with the text talk is some higher-level vocabulary such as "abrasive," "overinflated," and "decadent." The main topics of the book would most likely appeal to older girls (e.g., fashion, makeup, crushes, babysitting). There is also quite a bit of mean girl dialogue that borders on bullying between Nikki and Makenzie. Younger girls may not be prepared to deal with or understand this kind of talk. Teachers, librarians and parents should be aware that the book also includes self-deprecating humor that borders on self-loathing. For example, Nikki calls herself and her life "horribly pathetic" and says she'd like to "end it all" by flushing herself down the toilet. Reviewer: Heather Welsh

Truly adorable illustrations grace this popular Wimpy-Kid-for-girls diary of a lower-middle-class tween maneuvering through cliques and drama at her ritzy private school. Poor Nikki is a scholarship student, part of the deal her father, as school exterminator, cut with the school. And his truck sports a giant, disgusting roach on top as advertising! Russell is an attorney but is said to prefer writing tween books to legal briefs. If Dork Diaries keeps up its ascent, maybe she can trade in those little black suits for comfy bunny slippers.

This is a wonderful book! I have the whole entire series. And i enjoyed each and ever second i read the book. I am a fifth grader readingthis book, and i just got the fourth and three and a half, and i really cannot wait until i get my hands on the books to read them. I love the zany, comical life of a sixth graders life,, any way it might actually give me a heads up on how to avoid horrible people in middle school, because any way i am going to grafuate soon. So i recomend this book for people of all ages. It is not innapropiate at all, i believe, and it will make you lol! Hope u love the book. Bye bye Izzybella

I thought that it was a very good book. At times it could be a bit predictable but at others it waacomplete surprize. Most kids dont want to admit it but they know they hav a special place in their heart for dork diaries and diary of a wimpy kid books. The reason i included diary of a wimpy kid books in a review about dork diaries is because they are similar in a lot of ways. The main difference is that dork diaries is a more feminine book while diary of a wimpy kid is a more masculane book. That was my other issue with dork diaries if a boy wanted to read it they wouod not enjoy it becaise it is the diary of a teen girl. Other than that dork diaries was great. I felt like i was reading my older sisters diary in the fact that i couldnt stop.
