Tales From Austin Motel (Debbie Davies)
West Coast-bred blues guitarist, songwriter, and singer Debbie Davies traveled to Texas for her new CD, TALES FROM THE AUSTIN MOTEL. As sidemen, she picked up Double Trouble, the rhythm section of Stevie Ray Vaughan's original power trio. Bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton are no-frills players and make a great team with Davies, whose guitar work is precise and tasty, recalling the Master of the Telecaster, the late Albert Collins. Davies penned most of the set; a highlight, "Just Stepped in the Blues," grabs you with its shoulder-shakin' beat and catchy lyrics. The instrumental "Percolatin'" pays tribute to Vaughan, while Davies's vocals on Willie Dixon's "I Want to Be Loved" are reminiscent of another Texas blues rocker, Lou Ann Barton. But Davies's forte is the liquid guitar lines, and her solos in this set are often sublime.
