Tales from the Acoustic Planet

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
This version of the Acoustic Planet is a very bluegrassy one indeed, with four classics of the genre, including Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Special." And 14 original tunes. On these TALES, Fleck takes the opportunity to integrate his explorations into new age, jazz, and world music with traditional bluegrass. Celtic riffs enliven "Plunky's Lament," and there's a string-band air to "The Overgrown Waltz," while jazz finds a home at "Spanish Point." The tight supporting ensemble includes Sam Bush on mandolin, Mark Schatz on bass, Dobro ace Jerry Douglas, and guitarist Tony Rice -- all outstanding instrumentalists with their own solo careers who together attack tunes such as "Blue Mountain Hop," "Buffalo Nickel," and...

With this return to his native ground, Fleck solidifies his reputation as the banjo's foremost virtuoso.
All Music Guide - Brian Beatty
Whether this exceptional album is jazz with its roots in bluegrass or vice versa doesn't matter, because whatever it is, it works -- wonderfully. Fleck is joined by his jazz friends Chick Corea and Branford Marsalis as well as his progressive bluegrass pals Sam Bush, Tony Rice, and Jerry Douglas, plus members of his usual backing band, the Flecktones Victor Wooten and Future Man. The resulting performances should pique the interest of curious listeners across any number of genres.

    Calming

Take note that the present posted B&N review is of Acoustic Planet Vol.2. This first Acoustic Planet project is in a similar vein as the Flecktones. After a couple listens, I find it soothing. I didn't find the fire of Live Art or Live at the Quick or the adventure of Throw down Your Heart or Ten From Little Worlds. At this price, if you are a Fleck fan, you might as well buy this set just to hear his acoustic banjo playing.
