Overview

Even in a bullpen full of characters, Curtis Leskanic stood out. Most of the time, he just couldn't help himself. But on occasion, there was a method to his madness. "We were going through a rough period in 1997," Jerry Dipoto recalled. "We had just gone into Texas and San Francisco and got crushed. I mean, this was a bad road trip. So, first day back in Denver, everybody gets to the clubhouse around 2-2:30 in the afternoon, and Curtis had pulled the treadmill out of the weight room and into the clubhouse.

"He's right there when you walk in. You couldn't miss him. And he's wearing his Pittsburgh Steelers helmet, tennis shoes, and that's it. And he's running about 100 miles-per-hour on the treadmill. I don't know how long he ran, but it was for quite awhile, because he waited for every guy to walk in.

"And when you walked in, you dropped all the heaviness, all the weight of the bad trip. You couldn't help but laugh. It was fabulous. It got everybody to forget the miserable trip. We were back to doing what we usually do. We were having fun again."
