Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Alaska is not a place for the faint of heart or for those who relish life's creature comforts. In exchange for living in one of the most beautiful places on earth, Alaskans must endure exceedingly harsh weather, profound isolation, and a wary relationship with Mother Nature. Kaniut, himself the author of several books on Alaska (Alaska Bear Tales, Danger Stalks the Land), here collects others' writings on the state to present more terrific tales of man against the elements. Recollections from fishermen, trekkers on the Iditarod National Historic Trail, and bush pilots who fly to remote areas of Alaska and are often the only contact residents have with the outside world make up the bulk of these "tales from the edge." But there are also some welcome glimpses into the lives of people who have chosen to make Alaska their home, as well as a fascinating section of writings by Native Americans. This book is as far removed from a tourist guide as a book can be-and that's what makes it so unique and irresistible. Highly recommended.-Joseph L.
