Ron Maly has been following University of Iowa football games since the 1940?s. His writing career began as a 16- year-old reporter for the Cedar Rapids Gazette. He earned a degree in political science from the University of Iowa in 1958 and was named sports editor of the Albert Lea Tribune in Minnesota. Then, for nearly 40 years, he covered major events for the Des Moines Register and was named Iowa's Sportswriter of the Year in 1977, 1978, 1994, and 1996. Since his retirement from the newspaper business in 1999, Maly has continued to write for magazines and still covers Hawkeye games as a columnist for his website.
