Overview

It's common knowledge that Hollywood leans left. This peculiar phenomenon would not be all that important if it weren't for the fact that celebrity status has come to mean power. We're not talking about the kind of power that gets you out of a shoplifting fix or a cross-dressing jam. We're talking real political power. Price clipped. It's common knowledge that Hollywood leans left. This peculiar phenomenon would not be all that important if it weren't for the fact that celebrity status has come ... to mean power. We're not talking about the kind of power that gets you out of a shoplifting fix or a cross-dressing jam. We're talking real political power. These days lots of stars try to use their status to mess with public policy. Never mind that Hollywood celebs often have no more training or expertise in the stuff they're promoting than the average John or Jane Q. What they do have is press coverage. That makes them influential. And they have star power. That makes them big draws for politicos who need to raise big bucks. In Tales from the Left Coast, author and political commentator James Hirsen aims his satirical squirt gun at Hollywood to expose celebrity "pundits" for what they really are: media circus hounds who can't tell populism from Bolshevism. A rollicking read full of hits and humor, Tales from the Left Coast uncovers many of the most ridiculous, infuriating, and outrageous political stunts pulled by celebrities of today and yesterday, and answers questions such as: Which star wanted to trade America's favorite "No-Spin"-meister for terrorist Osama bin Laden? Who in Hollywood publicly challenged the manhood of President George W. Bush? When did a Hollywood actress give up on pork because she was told that kids and pigs share something special? And many, many more tales that will leave you either laughing uncontrollably or steaming under the collar! Read more Show Less

When Barbra Streisand sends Dick Gephardt a personal fax, it makes headline news. When international relations expert Sean Penn leads his own "tour of peace" in Baghdad, every news desk across the country reports it. It's no secret that Hollywood has a leftward tilt when it comes to politics. But what the celebrity-fawning media fail to show is how Hollywood's liberal bias affects actors, movies, and even public policy.
In Tales from the Left Coast, author and political commentator James Hirsen digs deep into the liberal underbelly of Hollywood to reveal how biased politics have corrupted the entire entertainment industry. Through extensive research and scores of interviews, Hirsen uncovers some of the most ridiculous, infuriating, and damning political stunts pulled by celebrities of yesterday and today, and he traces the tangled web of influence the Hollywood elite have over politicians in Washington, D.C.

    Very enlightening

This Book was very interesting, and tells us what can happen when too much power falls into the wrong hands. This books tells all the low tricks that the celebrities use to influence people's votes, shady people that they hang out with, and think are good people, and all outrageous things they do, and think they can get away with, just because they are celebs. People like Mr Moore try to use smear tactics, and divide this country (Working hard to destroy what this country was build on), and Books like this are very important, because it keeps them accountable for their actions. The way they are trying to single handedly destroy Mel Gibson, because they don't like the type of movie he is making. Jim Hirsen did a very good job with this book, I am usually not very political, and am very moderate, but will at times buy political books to get Info on what is going on, Mr Hirsen gives facts on things that have happened, while someone like Mr Moore try to smear Polticians he does not agree with, just because of who they are, with very little facts.

    Keeping the country divided

I believe that a lot of the current hate-mongering that is going on between the left and right political factions is a deliberate attempt to keep our citizens divided on serious issues. As long as the U.S. population cannot agree on the small stuff, they will never come together on issues such as national healthcare, problems in our economy, and the loss of jobs in the U.S. - including millions of white collar jobs going overseas! It is a well-documented fact that the U.S. middle class has been declining in size since the 1970's. With a global economy, there is the threat of a global standard of living. A global economy will benefit workers in third world countries and corporations looking for cheaper labor. But I guarantee you, a global economy will not help the working class in the U.S. I speak of this, because the author continually praises capitalism and the free enterprise system in 'Tales from the Left Coast'. I cannot agree with his sentiment, unfortunately. Any system that is based on greed, competition, and ruthlessness - basically a system that rewards the biggest shark in the tank - is bound to have some serious flaws and ethical considerations. I feel that 'Tales from the Left Coast' is another deliberate smokescreen to keep the hatred flowing between the Right and the Left. And serious issues will never be addressed as long as the public continues to participate in this hate mongering. 'Tales from the Left Coast' resorts to mean-spirited humor at every turn, glossing over real issues and making a mockery of important celebrity causes. The author, an ex-musician who probably did more than his share of partying during the 60's and 70's, is more than likely, another baby boomer 'hippycrit'. The writer takes celebrity positions on pollution, animal experimentation, women's rights, the war in Iraq, and vegetarianism and turns them into big jokes. I agree that some of the statements (if they were actually made by the celebrities quoted in the book) were pretty ridiculous. But the author never hesitates to let us know these celebrities are not professional politicians - so why wouldn't they place foot in mouth on occasion when discussing these issues? We all know of professional politicians who do it all the time! Since the writer makes no bones about how wonderful our capitalistic system is, he should not be slamming celebrities who played the system and won, and are now using their fame and fortune to further their own political agendas. That's the way it works - money talks, and well, you know the rest. Some of the statements in the book are not even factual, such as the author's claim that Michael Moore's documentary 'Bowling for Columbine' is anti-gun propaganda. Obviously, if the author had actually seen the movie, Moore's primary concern about the high murder rate in this country has more to do with human behavior than actual gun ownership. And the author's statement is interesting - considering that Moore is a card-carrying member of the NRA! To quote the author, 'Michael Moore conducted an ambush-style interview of Charlton Heston'. (Heston is the current president of the NRA.) Moore's ambush on Heston amounted to an interview that Heston agreed to, and the ambush occurred when Michael Moore asked Heston why he wanted to have an NRA rally directly after the incident at Columbine. There was another instance when Heston showed the same lack of tact - he planned to do a NRA rally in a town where a six-year old girl had just been shot to death. She had been killed by a six-year old classmate. One of Moore's objectives in 'Bowling for Columbine' is to determine why Canadians, who average two guns to each household, don't have a fraction of the homicides (by guns) as compared to the homicide rate in the U.S. There is also too much double-talk in this book. It is OK, according to the author, to use animals in medical experimentation. It is obvious to me that the author has done l
