Meet the Author

Tom Flores spent thirty-five years in the NFL in various capacities. He played for the Oakland Raiders from 1960 to 1961, again from 1963 to 1966, and was an assistant coach for four years. He was then head coach for the Raiders from 1979 to 1987, during which he compiled a regular-season record of 83–53 and won two Super Bowl championships. He was nominated for the National Football Hall of Fame in 2001 and currently does radio color commentary for the Raiders. Flores and his wife, Barbara, have twin sons, Mark and Scott, a daughter, Kim, and four grandchildren.

Matt Fulks started his journalism career while attending Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. Since then he has been involved in every form of media, including work with WSMV-TV (Nashville’s NBC affiliate), WAKM radio, and the Review-Appeal newspaper. Fulks is currently a regular contributor for various publications, including a weekly newspaper column, Behind the Stats, which focuses on inspirational stories from the world of sports. He is also the author or coauthor of six other books, including Behind the Stats: Tennessee’s Coaching Legends and Super Bowl Sunday, which he compiled in association with CBS Sports.

Jim Plunkett was one of the best quarterbacks to play professional football. He was the 1970 Heisman Trophy winner. After graduating from Stanford, he was drafted by the New England Patriots. He arrived in Oakland in 1978 and stayed with the Raiders until retiring in 1986. He took the Raiders to two Super Bowl victories (XV and XVIII). He was named MVP of Super Bowl XV and won the 1980 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.
