From The CriticsThe Tummy Trilogy, read by author Calvin Trillin, includes food-oriented essays ranging in content from the history of the buffalo wing to the quest for the perfect bagel. These adventures in eating are gathered from Trillin books including American Fried, Third Helpings and Alice, Let's Eat. Trillin reminds listeners to eat well and to frequent the kinds of places one might go "the night you came home after fourteen months in Korea." Trillin's subtle comic timing is every bit as enjoyable as his writing. He has a low, gruff voice and a leisurely pace, which suits material that is always witty and sometimes hilarious. Peppy music after each selection gives listeners an opportunity to catch their breath between courses, so to speak. The only conceivable complaint is that these seventeen ruminations end too soon, leaving fans hungry for more.
