All Music Guide - MacKenzie Wilson
Tales of a Librarian: A Tori Amos Collection is not only one of the most intriguing titles for a hits compilation, but the package itself captures only the best from Amos' years spent with Atlantic. As solid, interesting, and moving as anything she'd released since her 1992 debut, Little Earthquakes, Tales of a Librarian is an autobiographical account of Amos' life as a woman in a complex world, and her songs sift through various emotions and spirits. Regardless of what barrier she faced, she never compromised herself as an individual. Her fans know this, and the quirky arrangement of Tales of a Librarian reflects this and more. Her usual approach of having a story within a story is here, but like the title suggests, Amos organizes her classic singles as a bookshelf ready for research and examination. Each song is remastered and arranged according to era, and the production itself offers new breadth and breath to Amos' work as a whole. Instead of the Boys for Pele version, Armand van Helden's dance remix of "Professional Widow" is included. "Bliss" from Amos' To Venus and Back double album gets a crystallized lift in the studio, while two new songs are introduced for the first time: "Snow Cherries From France" and "Angels." They represent Amos' constant search for truth while witnessing various personal transformations. Reaching for such rightness has been her quest all along and through music she's told amazing stories that millions have come to believe and take seriously. Like Morrissey loyalists, Tori followers are a rare breed. They'll surely appreciate Tales of a Librarian even though they most likely own every single release Amos has ever issued. Those who don't own any of her albums and are looking for a decent collection of her work should enjoy this as well, although owning each of her albums is well worth it. [A bonus DVD featuring live songs recorded during Amos' final show of her 2003 North American tour as well as remixes for "Putting the Damage On" and "Mr. Zebra" is included here.]

An Absolute Must Have Tori Album

I ordered this cd several days ago, and I'm pleased to say that I'm not dissapointed!! I have been a "toriphile" for at least 5 years, and this new compilation of her greatest hits is absolutely the best!! I had the great opportunity to see her live at Radio City Music Hall in N.Y.C., and it was an out of body experience. She is in every sense of the word a true "musician". I love Tori Amos's music, and will never tire listening to it.

    A portrait of a musician's life

This album embodies the essence of Amos's journey through life told through her songs. She is what most other "recording artists" strive to be, musicians. In an era of "Recording Artists" it is refreshing to see their are still some legitimate artists such as Tori still in the industry. Her work exposes you to the person she is and has become. To truly experience Tori, you must see her live. She can occupy a theater that seats 5,000 people with just her and her piano. She has a relationship with her instrument that cannot be described with words. When she sits down and plays she becomes consumed by the music she creates with her instrument. Music has been like a warm blanket that has kept her warm at her coldest moments and allows her to share her lifes joys and sorrows with her audience. I have been very privileged to experience this first hand in San Diego, where she did 2 shows in one night, back to back. Her voice and music takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions but it is a ride that you will never forget. I have long been a fan for over 10 years and will continue to be. Her music is true to the person she is, never comprimising her artistry for profitability. She has succumbed to her art. As she has said "You do not choose music, it chooses you". I myself am a musician, a classically trained vocalist. It is refreshing to see that some contemporary artists can still write such complex music, being true to theory while adding ther own personal nuances. The CD is a brilliant presentation of a world-class artist.

    Simply Amazing

Opening with the song "Precious things". This retrospective of the career of tori amos is a must have for any fan, new or old. Tori handpicked 20 songs from extensive catalog, plus two newly recorded b-sides. Personally, I think the tracks were very well chosen and truly showcase her musical talent to the fullest. In addition, Tori has given us a glimpse into her pre-show soundchecks and career spanning photo albums. Overall I would rate this as one of her best albums to date. If you haven't experienced Tori yet, This is definately the album to check out.

    Best of Tori

I think this overall is a good compilation of Tori Amos music so if you like her music or even think you might this is a good cd to have. However the order of the songs seems like it was totally random and the album looses quality there. Also Tori dosen't seem to put quite as much soul into the songs this time around. But still Tori is an excellent songwriter/singer and this highlights some of her best work.

    Expected More

Although the CD includes many of Tori's hits and a couple of new songs, I think some B tracks should have been included. I was really disappointed with the DVD. I was expecting more than a performance warm-up and a photo shoot.

    Classic, Classic, Classic

This album will quite possibly be the bridge between those who only like Tori Amos, and those who truly LOVE her. All of the 19 Classic Tori Tracks have been remixed and reconditioned, with a refreshed and renewed sound quality and depth. There are even a few new songs, organized among the classics in a surprsingly smart and fun way--Hence the title, "Tales of a Librarian." Included is a DVD with a live performance sound check and photo galleries. This is an excellent Album, a wonderful way to achieve an anthological review of an artist with true Originality!
