Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
A treasure awaits the owner of this beautifully illustrated collection of fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen. This book contains thirteen of his tales, including such beloved ones as "The Little Mermaid," "Thumbelina," and "The Ugly Duckling," and it is part of the "Candlewick Illustrated Classics" series. Lewis begins this collection by sharing Andersen's life story, which gives the reader a greater insight into the mind and heart of the man who wrote these cherished tales. At the beginning of each tale, Lewis provides an introduction which includes information about each tale, such as the original publication year, Andersen's inspiration for the tale, and other interesting facts. The information given in each introduction varies with each tale, but every introduction includes Lewis' own personal critique. Stewart's accompanying illustrations are magical and thought provoking. They seem to echo the fairy tale theme of the text with their winsome quality. It might be of importance to add here concerning the illustrations that one drawing in "The Emperor's New Clothes" shows the naked backside of the Emperor and another shows a side view. This book will most likely be enjoyable to children of all ages who are still interested in fairy tales. Even some middle school children and teenagers may enjoy this collection, especially if they knew they would be surprised at some of the endings, quite unlike the Disney version they most likely grew up watching. For independent reading, this book seems most appropriate for middle readers. These tales would also be useful as bedtime stories for young children. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson
