Tales of Old Florida

Overview

One hundred years ago, Florida was a wilderness of swamp and beach, dense forest and abundant wild game.  Undiscovered, except for a few pioneer sportsmen and hearty farmers and ranchers, the state was still a frontier. True, a few towns flourished on the fishing and the Caribbean trade, but it was generally a sleepy place, far removed from the later boom of the 1920s.

Here is a collection of original articles and stories of the old Florida, of hunters and Indians, the development of the sportsman's paradise, the vast canvas of nature prior to the coming of the condominium.

Illustrated with rare drawings, photographs and engravings, this book will recreate a paradise that can never be again.

Outstanding and historical book warranting republication.

Book is a collection of magazine articles and short stories from the late 19th & early 20th Century focused on Florida recovering from the Civil War and in development from almost raw territory. Articles display evolution of (American) English, provides superb insight into the how the USA was changing, and is a marvel of commentary on natural wildlife. Book is focused on Florida, but would make an excellent text for students of American history. It provides solid insight into the social dominance of New York City during the turn of the century. Title is somewhat misleading in that it is not a collection of entertaining tales so much as it is a selected insight into an evolving state (Florida) and how it fit in with the nation and influenced what we are today. Photographs and other illustrations are good and offer a supporting presentation in and of themselves. All in all, this is quite a bargain.
