Dive, run, and soar through this exhilarating special edition in the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling series, with a story by WILD BORN author, Brandon Mull.

Briggan the Wolf, Uraza the Leopard, Jhi the Panda, and Essix the Falcon -- the Four Fallen. Long before they were spirit animals, they roamed the wilds as Great Beasts, the most powerful beings in Erdas. When a mad king arose, the four banded together with an army of humans and animals to defeat him.

But they weren't the only Great Beasts in the war. A deadly scheme was already underway, hatched by two of their own. To save their world, the four had to give up their lives.

These are the lost stories of the most selfless acts of bravery that Erdas has ever seen, and the secret betrayal that started it all. These are TALES OF THE GREAT BEASTS.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joan Vogel
Fantasy is not only alive and well, but is also exponentially popular with young readers and adults who are devotees of the genre. Seizing on the success of other multi-author series, Scholastic presents this offering in “The Spirit Animals” series. In the mythical land of Erdas, eleven-year-old children must drink a bit of the Nectar to ascertain if they can call up a spirit animal. Few can. Four, however, succeed and call up the Four Fallen Beasts, the legends of an ancient war of treachery that wreaked havoc on Erdas. There are signs that another war is imminent. Before the war of old, four animals lived as the most powerful creatures in that land and banded together to fight off the evildoers. This volume is a prequel, taking readers back for the origins of the Reptile King, Jhi (panda), Uraza (leopard), Briggan (wolf), Essix (falcon), and the Green Cloaks. Four short stories are skillfully threaded together showing loyalty, bravery, complexity of reasoning, and the somber reality that freedom comes with a price. The literary quality is very high, with appropriate vocabulary, description, and pacing. The 186 action-filled pages are the “history” of the other volumes that provides enhanced appreciation of them and an excellent game website that includes classroom teaching ideas. This and the others in the series are ‘should have’ purchases for a middle school or public libraries, as well as a welcome addition to the personal libraries of the series’ fans. Reviewer: Joan Vogel; Ages 9 to 12.
