Children's Literature
Another in the "Tales of the RAF (Royal Air Force)" series, this story is about the Hampton Airfields first use of the new Spitfire fighter plane. While Hawker Hurricanes were good planes, they were too slow and not nearly as maneuverable as the German Messerschmitt 109s. It was therefore up to the British military to come up with a better plane. In book three of this series, Don Patterson tells the story of the arrival of the first Spitfires and the training of the first pilots to fly these magnificent planes. Harry Winslow is fascinated with the new tool of war his friends at Hampton Airfield will get to use. However, Colonel Harrison has been given orders that only authorized personnel are allowed near the airfield, and it is up to Harry's sister Susan, who works for the Colonel, to tell Harry he can no longer spend time with his friends such as Captain Dawson. Once again, Patterson has created a simple, easy to read book about the use of the Spitfire and how it changed the air war over Britain. As with the other books, Harry's ability to deal with this new situation gives the story a human touch. The last section of the book explains the development of airplanes from the first flight by Orville and Wilbur Wright to the creation of war planes and their use. 2000, Hindsight, Orsborn
