Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Uma Krishnaswami
Storyteller Sally Pomme Clayton opens with an introductory account about trading stories with her sister beneath a makeshift tent, a blanket thrown over a washing line. She relates this memoir of childhood to later experiences on the steppes of southern Kazakhstan. This preface, "The Storyteller's Tale," ends with a note on the importance of storytelling in the countries of Central Asia. The stories themselves include collections of riddles, songs, and single-page tales that open quickly and snap shut in whimsical rhythms, as well as longer stories. "Zarina's Orchard" is a cautionary tale from Tadjikistan enfolding a love story and a girl whose growing bravery includes an understanding of the directions she's given. In the evocative tale, "The Carpet of Dreams," from Afghanistan, the perfect carpet contains a telling secret woven into its pattern, a secret that can spark considerable debate on its meaning in life and work. And "Blue Sky, White Wing" uses a poetic form to tell an ancient creation story. Pen and ink and watercolor illustrations are colorful and vibrant, echoing the mood in each successive offering. Those tales noted as being from particular countries come from Tadjikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan. The others, presumably, are to be found in more than one country in the region. An "About the Stories" afterword adds some detail on where the author found each tale, along with a few additional sources. A colorful two-page map of the region, and a glossary, make up the back matter. Reviewer: Uma Krishnaswami
