WHAT IF YOUR WHOLE LIFE WAS A LIE?

One Planet.

Two Worlds.

Population: Human ... 7 billion.
Others ... unknown.

When 14-year-old Charlie Blake wakes up sweating and gasping for air in the middle of the night, he knows it is happening again. This time he witnesses a brutal murder. He's afraid to tell anyone. No one would believe him ... because it was a dream. Just like the one he had four years ago - the day before his dad died.

Charlie doesn't know why this is happening. He would give anything to have an ordinary life. The problem: he doesn't belong in the world he knows as home.

He belongs with the others.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Donna L. Phillips
Fourteen-year-old orphan Charlie Blake teams up with twelve-year-old orphan Richmond; female foil Alex; and twenty-four-going-on-fifty-year-old Derkein Odessa to search for the mythic subterranean world of Arcadia. Each hopes to find Arcadia's Etheric Plane, "where you can have anything your heart desires." Arcadia crosses paths with our world at transient gates that open four times a year. Charlie's special powers (and double scoops of fate or fortune) equip him to find a gate and deal with the warring Arcadians. A lot can go wrong in such a place, and when it does, the action is breakneck. It is, however, punctuated with protracted periods of sorting out the rules in a complicated game overpopulated with a tangled bureaucracy of angel armies that can be tedious to learn and difficult to keep straight. Top-to-toe descriptions of characters' outfits seem superfluous. The book has the feel of a multiplayer simulation game without the benefit of character cards. Stone includes an appendix with a map of Arcadia and a catalog of the angelic chain of command which confused readers may want to visit early and often. Nevertheless, Talisman Of El will appeal to readers who devour fantasy seasoned with a bit of myth and the right kind of what-if questions. What if the talisman falls into the wrong hands? What if I came back from the dead and could not ever die again? This is yet another fantasy trilogy, so expect some answers in books 2 and 3. Reviewer: Donna L. Phillips
